So, You Can Get Mad Too

1324 Words
After leaving the hospital, Sara Hart found herself aimlessly wandering along the tree-lined street, her mind heavy and unsettled. As a chemical engineer, the thought of a lab accident was her worst nightmare. A life had been lost - someone she didn’t even know and yet, she couldn’t shake the sadness. But what weighed on her even more was seeing James Hill in such a state. Life had already been unkind to him, and just when things seemed to be getting on track, fate had played this cruel trick on him. Why is it that some people, who already struggle so hard just to survive, have to face endless trials? James Hill was different from her. He truly loved this field, pouring his heart, mind, and sweat into it to change his fate. But life doesn’t always reward hard work. It was a bright September day, the sun high in the sky, but Sara felt an unexpected chill. She had grown used to being alone - walking alone, living alone. She didn’t want to return to the lab, but she didn’t know where else to go, so she kept walking, aimlessly, her thoughts a jumble. At a corner, just as she stepped into the street, a car came speeding around, screeching to a halt. Sara instinctively stepped back but lost her balance and fell to the ground. “Are you okay?” The driver jumped out of the car to help her up. “Did you get hurt… Sara?” The familiar voice pulled her from her daze. She looked up and recognized the boy and his flashy Koenigsegg. “Ethan?” Ethan Brown quickly bent down to help her to her feet. “Did you hurt yourself?” Sara shook her head. “No, you didn’t hit me.” She had fallen when she stepped back, but the car hadn’t touched her. Ethan glanced at her hand. “But you scraped your hand... Let me take you to the hospital.” It was only then that Sara noticed her palm was burning. She must’ve scraped it when she fell, and now it was raw, bleeding slightly, and covered in dirt. “This was my fault for not watching where I was going. It’s not your fault.” “Whether it’s my fault or not, your hand still needs treatment, doesn’t it?” Ethan said, frowning at her casual attitude. Ethan could tell something was off. The last time he’d met Sara, she’d been composed and focused. Today, she seemed lost, walking straight into the street without even noticing. As Sara tried to walk away, Ethan grabbed her arm. “You shouldn’t be wandering around like this. It’s dangerous.” He opened the passenger door and gently pushed her inside. “I’m taking you to the hospital to get checked out. Better safe than sorry.” “I’m not going to sue you, and besides, you didn’t hit me,” Sara mumbled softly. Ethan raised an eyebrow, surprised by her bluntness. “I wasn’t worried about that…” In fact, he just wanted to avoid any potential trouble. After all, he had almost hit her. Better to make sure she was okay than leave any risks behind. Still, he didn’t expect her to be so straightforward. Ethan chuckled. “You really do surprise me every time.” He pulled out some antiseptic and cotton swabs from the glove compartment, taking Sara’s hand. “If you don’t want to go to the hospital, fine. But we need to clean this up, or it’ll get infected.” Sara didn’t resist. She needed her hands for her experiments. As the cotton swab touched her wound, Sara winced slightly but didn’t cry out or pull her hand away. The grit from the road had gotten into the cut, and Ethan carefully picked out the debris. “This might hurt a bit.” Sara bit her lip but remained silent. Once he was done, Ethan looked at her pale face and teased, “You’ve got a high pain tolerance.” “Thank you,” Sara replied quietly. Ethan raised an eyebrow and asked, “What’s wrong? Bad day?” Sara glanced at him, noticing his hair had changed color again - this time it was silver-gray. With his boyish face, he looked like a high school student. “Do you really like dyeing your hair that much?” she asked, her question seemingly unrelated. Ethan wasn’t fazed. He ran a hand through his hair with a grin. “Like it? I love it!” Sara blinked, a little taken aback by his enthusiasm. Seeing her stunned expression, Ethan burst out laughing. “How about I take you for a drive? I guarantee you’ll feel better afterward.” Before she could respond, he leaned over to buckle her seatbelt. Startled, Sara instinctively leaned toward the window, trying to put some space between them. Noticing her reaction, Ethan smirked. “Don’t worry, I’m just being considerate. Now, hang on tight!” With that, the blue sports car shot forward like an arrow released from a bow. Although it wasn’t her first time riding in his car, Sara still wasn’t prepared for the sudden speed. Her body slammed back against the seat, her stomach flipping. Ethan glanced at her, his smile widening as he eased up on the accelerator slightly. Outside, the buildings flew past in a blur, the wind carrying the faint scent of osmanthus flowers. The early autumn air was cool, neither too hot nor too cold - just perfect. Sara took a few deep breaths, the fresh air clearing her mind, chasing away the heaviness that had been weighing on her chest. As they left the towering skyscrapers behind, the air seemed fresher, the landscape greener. They were climbing a winding mountain road now, surrounded by trees with thick, sturdy branches. Sara felt herself relax a little. Ethan glanced over at her. “Wanna try something more exciting?” “Huh?” “Hold on!” The engine roared, and Sara was thrown back against her seat once more. Her hands instinctively gripped the seatbelt as she stared at Ethan in disbelief. Ethan’s grin grew wider. “Let me show you what my car can really do.” The trees outside became a blur, the car moving so fast that the scenery was impossible to make out. Sara’s heart raced. She’d thought he was going fast before, but now it felt like he was pushing the car to its limits. The winding mountain road twisted and turned, but Ethan didn’t slow down. If anything, he stepped harder on the gas. Sara’s stomach lurched with every sharp turn, her grip on the seatbelt tightening as she felt her organs shifting inside her. Ethan seemed completely unfazed, clearly enjoying himself, the wind tousling his silver-gray hair. As they climbed higher, the road grew more treacherous. Even though there were guardrails along the edge, the sheer cliffs beyond made Sara’s heart pound. One wrong move, and they could go over the edge. “Stop the car! Let me out!” Sara’s voice was high with panic. Ethan’s eyes stayed on the road. “We’re almost there. Don’t worry, my driving is fine.” “Stop the car!” Sara reached for the seatbelt latch. With a loud screech, the car came to a halt. Ethan turned to her, amusement dancing in his eyes. “You’re scared?” “I wanted to clear my head, not risk my life!” Sara’s voice was two octaves higher than usual. There were still so many things she hadn’t done, so many people she hadn’t seen enough of - like Adrian Blake... She wasn’t about to take unnecessary risks. But instead of getting upset, Ethan burst into laughter. He leaned back in his seat, the corners of his mouth lifting even higher. “So, you can get mad after all. Now that’s more like it.”
