I Know

Somehow, Sara Hart detected a hint of teasing in Adrian Blake’s voice. She nodded obediently, afraid that he might misunderstand her. Quickly, she added, “Last night was an accident. I usually don’t drink.” “Hmm,” Adrian Blake replied lightly. It was clear to him that she wasn't lying. But the difference between her sober self and her drunken behavior was striking. As they fell into silence, Adrian’s phone suddenly vibrated twice. He glanced at the screen - it was a string of wild messages from Lucas Graves in their four-person group chat: - "Adrian, how was it last night?" - "With a beauty in your arms, did you make a move?" - "With that soft, cuddly beautiful lady, are you seriously gonna play the gentleman?" Adrian Blake’s expression twitched slightly as he scanned the messages. Without hesitation, he pressed the side button and locked his phone. Sara Hart, still sitting next to him, noticed his abrupt reaction and looked at him curiously. “Just some spam messages,” Adrian said nonchalantly. Sara nodded. Spam messages were indeed annoying - she usually ignored them, too. Just then, Grandma Blake entered the room, holding little Jimmy’s hand. Jimmy Blake ran straight to Sara and handed her a jasmine flower. “For me?” Sara asked, a bit surprised. “No,” Jimmy shook his head and leaned closer, signaling her to bend down. Standing on his tiptoes, he whispered in her ear, “It’s for the little sister.” Sara Hart’s face instantly turned bright red. She glanced at Adrian Blake, then turned her back to him before whispering to Jimmy, “Jimmy, do not say that!” Jimmy glanced at Adrian with wide eyes and replied innocently, “I didn’t say it in front of Adrian!” Sara Hart: … “Alright, Jimmy, you’re right. We won’t mention it anymore.” Kyle Thorne entered at that moment and caught sight of the two whispering conspiratorially. “Jimmy, what are you two whispering about with Sara?” Suddenly, both Sara and Jimmy froze, and even Adrian looked over. Jimmy looked from Adrian to Kyle, his small face scrunching up as if deeply conflicted. Kyle Thorne plopped down beside Jimmy. “Hey, Jimmy, is there something that I can’t know?” Jimmy Blake puffed up his chest and declared, “We’re talking about the little sister!” He pointed directly at Sara’s stomach, his childlike voice ringing out clearly. Everyone was stunned. Kyle Thorne turned to look at Adrian Blake, then back at Sara Hart, with sheer disbelief written on his face. “You two…” Could it be that there was already a baby on the way? Sara Hart was completely taken aback, her face flushed a deep red. Right now, she wished she could find a hole to hide in! She looked at Jimmy with a helpless expression, silently pleading, “Didn't we agree not to say anything?” How would Adrian Blake interpret this? Jimmy’s dark eyes blinked innocently. He reasoned to himself that while he wasn’t supposed to tell Adrian, Sara had never mentioned Kyle Thorne. Sara opened her mouth but was at a loss for words. She couldn’t even bring herself to look at Adrian. But Adrian wasn’t misled by Jimmy’s words. He called Jimmy over, his tone calm. “Jimmy, what are you talking about? There’s no little sister.” Jimmy, always obedient to Adrian Blake, shuffled over to him, seemingly forgetting about his previous promise to Sara. “But Grandma said there would be a little sister in Sara’s tummy!” Jimmy Blake said earnestly. Adrian glanced toward the kitchen where Grandma Blake was, fully aware that she must have put such thoughts into the boy’s head. “There’s no little sister,” Adrian Blake repeated. This time, however, Jimmy was not convinced. He insisted, “There will be one in the future.” Adrian Blake: … Sara Hart: … Then Kyle Thorne chimed in, “Even if Sara did have a baby, Jimmy, it would be your niece, not your little sister!” Jimmy’s eyes widened in shock, clearly rattled by this information. His eyes filled with tears, and he burst into sobs, the tears falling like a string of pearls. He wanted a little sister - one like his kindergarten classmate’s, a sweet and cuddly girl! “Hey, don’t cry!” Kyle Thorne panicked, picking up the boy and rushing him toward the kitchen. “Grandma…” That left Sara Hart and Adrian Blake alone, sharing a moment of awkward eye contact. --- At lunch, Jimmy sat next to Grandma Blake, his eyes still red. He focused on eating the rice she fed him, sniffling occasionally. Grandma Blake had evidently managed to console him somehow, but Jimmy refused to look at Kyle Thorne. Sara could only feel helpless. Certain topics were simply too complex to explain to a child - she just hoped he wouldn’t keep bringing it up. Adrian, however, remained calm throughout. After lunch, Adrian announced that it was time to head back. He’d already spent two days here and had business to attend to. Grandma Blake, understanding his work commitments, didn’t try to persuade him to stay. Instead, she turned to Sara Hart. “What about you, Sara?” Adrian Blake looked at her too. Sara Hart thought for a moment. “I’ll go back as well.” She wanted to be with Adrian. Grandma Blake beamed and nodded. “Alright, I’ll have Alice prepare dinner for you both.” She then addressed Adrian Blake. “Take care of yourself, don’t overwork, and look after Sara.” “I will, Grandma.” --- Kyle Thorne was happy to have some free time, planning to stay at the Grandma’s place for the rest of the holiday - or at least until Zelda Blake forced him to return. Jimmy Blake, meanwhile, was reluctant to part ways with Adrian Blake and Sara Hart, but he had no choice. As they left, Jimmy sat in Grandma Blake’s lap, his still-puffy eyes following them with reluctance. Feeling a twinge of guilt, Sara patted Jimmy’s head. “Adrian and I have work to do. We’ll play with you next time.” Jimmy Blake nodded reluctantly. “Okay…” “Let’s go,” Adrian Blake said, and they both got into the car. As it pulled away, Grandma Blake remained outside, her gaze following them until they disappeared from sight. Alice Miller, standing beside her, smiled. “Madam, it seems like Young Master and Young Madam are getting closer.” Grandma Blake sighed as she held Jimmy’s hand. “I hope so.” The past two days had indeed shown a warmer side to their relationship, but she knew it would take more than that to create lasting change. Jimmy, sensing his grandmother’s mood, looked up at her and said in his little voice, “Grandma, don’t be sad. I’ll stay with you!” Grandma Blake chuckled and patted his head. “Alright, Jimmy, you stay with me.” In the car, Sara Hart kept glancing at Adrian Blake, hesitant to speak. Over the past two days, they had grown closer, as if the cold distance between them had faded like the trees on the roadside. Still, she felt the need to clarify what had happened earlier. “Um… about what Jimmy said earlier…” she began awkwardly. “He was just making things up. I didn’t mean… what he said…” Adrian Blake glanced over and noticed her flustered expression. His fingers lightly tapped the steering wheel, a hint of mischief flashing in his eyes. “What did you mean, then?” he asked evenly, still looking straight ahead. Sara blushed deeper. How was she supposed to answer that? “I mean… the whole little sister thing… I don’t know why Jimmy brought it up.” Her voice was small, but determined to clear up any misunderstanding. “Hmm.” Adrian’s response was nonchalant. As the light turned red, he finally turned to face her. His deep, dark eyes seemed to pierce right through her. “I know,” he said. Sara froze, unsure of his meaning.
