Patricia's statement made Carey and Detective Lopez want to question Talia for her role in the incident. Even if she hadn't covered up whatever really happened, she might still have been there when it went down. They also really needed to interrogate Keith about his role. They didn't believe that Pat had been the one to cause Ray's injury for a second; she was too frail to have hurt him like that. At most, if Pat really was involved in whatever occurred, she's guilty of attempting to cover it up for her son. Keith almost certainly had something to do with Jennings's injuries, whether accidental or not. An individual can be guilty of a crime whether it was intentional or not. If Ray didn't fall and Keith merely pushed him, which resulted in Ray's incident, that's still assault.
