Daniel Hayes was fairly satisfied with the small room he had rented. It was cheap, clean, reasonably comfortable, and close to the university. Just as importantly, the two female roommates seemed normal, educated, and easy enough to live with. At his current stage in life, those qualities mattered far more than decoration or square footage. He did not need luxury. He needed stability. He did not move in immediately, though. His things still had to be shipped over by his classmates—clothes, bedding, books, cables, notebooks, and all the random odds and ends that accumulated around graduate students as naturally as dust.
