Chapter Five The house broke out in a flutter of voices the moment Max stepped out the door. The ladies all spoke at once. Their voices were so shrill and they spoke so quickly that they all blended together. Jessica couldn’t make out a single word they said. She only knew that Grandma Ethel was suspiciously quiet. She touched the old lady on the shoulder. “Grandma, who was that?” “Weren’t you listening, girl?
