Chapter Twenty-FourStanding in front of Nigel Winchester's house, Ruth looked up at the night sky. Not a single star could be seen in the inky darkness. Late in the afternoon, a heavy mantle of clouds had rolled in, black and swollen. A vehicle rumbled toward her, and she ducked behind the letter box, holding her breath. The sedan passed. She waited a moment and listened for pedestrians. The night was silent, so she rose and crept toward the front door. She frowned when she saw an “X” of brown tape sealing the entrance. Drat! Now what? She moved to the window. I couldn't possibly be lucky enough to find it open, could I? Her gloved fingers gripped the top of the window and pushed. It slid up with a screech, and she breathed a prayer of thanks. Shame washed over her. She was thanking God
