DREAMS CHAPTER FIVE Emma, with a feigned expression of concern, led the search, guiding the family through the charade. As Mrs. Tyson’s eyes landed on the golden necklace hidden in Emily’s bag, shock and accusation painted her face “Emily, how could you?” Mrs. Tyson exclaimed, her voice filled with a mix of betrayal and disappointment. “I didn’t take it! I have no idea how it got to my bag”, I replied as I protested my innocence. The room fell into a suffocating silence as the family grappled with the implications of the damning discovery. The air in the Tyson mansion was thick with tension as Mrs. Tyson, fueled by anger and the belief that I was the one that had stolen her prized gold necklace, sought a means of retribution. Innocent and caught on the web of deception, i faced the brunt of her wrath. Fueled by a desire to hurt me without directly evicting me from the mansion due to Richard’s presence, she devised a plan that would exploit my vulnerability. She subtly spread rumors within their social circle, insinuating that I was untrustworthy and prone to theft. Mr. Tyson was the only person who believed in me, while Richard was still in doubts. He was torn between loyalty to his mother and a nagging sense of doubt about my innocence. He began to question the accusations. Something in him resisted the notion that I, who had become a quiet and diligent presence in their lives at least in the life of Mr. Tyson and his son, could be capable of theft. Mrs. Tyson decided to stage a confrontation on a hot afternoon, the tension in the mansion has reached a boiling point. In the presence of everyone, she confronted me with a cutting tone, accusing me of being a thief and deceiver. “Emily, we trusted you, and this is how you repay us? You think you can steal from us and get away with it?” her words were laid with venom as she sought to humiliate me in front of her entire family including the household staffs. Richard, unable to stand by and watch me being unjustly accused, intervened, “Mom, I don’t believe Emily would do something like this. There has to be a mistake”. “Oh my poor child! She has managed to trap you and now you don’t believe in anything anymore, even when the evidence is right in front of you” Mrs. Tyson exclaimed. As I endured the public humiliation, a mix of confusion, hurt, and anger welled within me. However, I was grateful to Richard for always defending me even though I still can’t figure out why”. I said to myself. Today been Friday would make it a week since the whole stealing event took place and I was being taunted by it every single day of my life. In the only place I find my peace, the only place which always reminded me to keep pushing and endure all the pains, the only place that reminded me to sought after my dreams. The room singled out for me, was where I could get all this. Faced with the whispers of theft and the strain within the Tyson mansion, a sudden realization stuck in my head as I was already deep in thoughts trying to process my life. A decision that held a promise of liberation. The walls of my room seemed to absorb the weight of my contemplation as I crafted a plan that would pave the way for my independence. The dim glow of the evening cast a warm hue in the room as I pondered about my newly made decision. The next day, with determination in my eyes, I approached Richard, one of the beacon support I felt within the mansion’s tumultuous confines. As we stood in the elegant living room, I took a deep breath before expressing my newfound resolve. “Richard, I’ve been thinking. I want to work. I want to contribute and save enough money to get my own place and pursue my dreams of going to the university and becoming a doctor” I stated, my voice carrying a mix of determination and vulnerability. Richard, genuinely surprised by my revelation, looked into my eyes, sensing the sincerity in my words. A subtle shift occurred within him-a newfound admiration for my resilience and a desire to support my aspirations. “Alright, Emily. I’ll check at the office if there are vacancies, and if they aren’t, I’ll find a role for you. We’ll figure this out together,” he assured, his empathy overriding any reservations he might have had. “Thank you, Richard,” I exclaimed, a burst of gratitude escaping me as I mistakenly embraced him in a hug, the warmth of the moment transcending the formality of our interactions. As the realization of my impromptu gesture set in, I pulled away, my cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “I’m sorry, Richard. I didn’t mean to…” Richard, however, smiled warmly, his sympathy evident. “No need to apologize, Emily. I’m here to support you. Unbeknownst to me, Emma, overhearing the conversation from the adjacent room, saw an opportunity to derail my plans. Her eyes gleamed with a devious intent as she schemed to ensure that I wouldn’t find a place within Richard’s company. The Tyson mansion buzzed with anticipation as Richard returned home, a gleam of excitement in his eyes. The news he carried was destined to alter the dynamics within the household. As he stepped into the living room, my gaze met his, with curiosity flickering in my eyes. “Emily, I have good news. I’ll be needing a secretary at the office, and I thought you’d be perfect for the role. Congratulations! You’ll start tomorrow,” Richard announced, a smile playing on his lips. “Thank you, Richard. I’m honored.” I replied feigning surprise and a smug of satisfaction. My heart swelled with happiness, genuinely pleased I had found an opportunity. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for Richard’s kindness in offering me a chance to contribute to the company. News of my appointment reached Mrs. Tyson’s ears, and her face contorted with disapproval when she confronted Richard. “why would you hire her as your secretary? This is a serious company, not a playground for whims and favors”. Richard, maintaining his composure, defended his decision. “Mom, Emily is capable, and I believe she can handle the responsibilities. It’s a fair opportunity for her to prove herself”. Mrs. Tyson’s stern expression didn’t waver, but Richard’s conviction remained steadfast. “I trust my judgement, mom. I know Emily will do well.” In the midst of this exchange, I observed the unfolding drama, silently grateful for the chance Richard had given to me to work and contribute to the company. My heart swayed between relief and apprehension as I realized the complexities of my position within the Tyson household. As the prospect of starting my new job dawned upon me, a sense of excitement was tempered by the realization that I lacked an appropriate attire for an office setting. I went to my bag to see if I could make up something for tomorrow, but I couldn’t. I screamed faintly in frustration, all I could see where my rubber ducks and some clothes the true one left for me. “let’s go out” I heard a voice say, I turned back only to see Richard at my door step. “what!” I exclaimed. “Let’s go out for shopping and please don’t refuse’ I’ll be waiting downstairs for you” he said leaving me surprised. Richard took me out for shopping, providing not just clothes but a gesture of support that resonated with genuine care. The following day, I was dressed in my new attire, I went down the stair case only to see eyes of people who cared about me and those who didn’t pry on me. Both Mr. Tyson and Richard’s eyes were filled with admiration as I reached the staircase. “Just look at her, she thinks she’s a princess, I am honestly wait for the day you’d leave my house. This place is not for a low life like you”.” Mrs. Tyson said harshly. “You are right ma, she’s really trying hard to fit into our prestigious status but she would never fit in, she would soon know her place in this house.” Emma supported. “Emily get into the car” Richard ordered as he couldn’t stand to see me get insulted. With no further ado I hurriedly went outside and got into the car and after five minutes Richard came into the and fastened his seat belt. “Emily”, he began “I’m very sorry for the way my mum and my girlfriend spoke to you” he said feeling sorry. “I am already used to their harsh words and I have already adapted to it, I really don’t now know what I have ever done to them to deserve such hatred coming from them” “If you weren’t in that house or if you didn’t have a good heart by now I would have been on the streets maybe begging as a means of livelihood” I replied to him feeling really grateful.
