Chapter 9

318 Words
"Kira?" her mom's voice was weak and tired on the other end. "I was supposed to see the doctor an hour ago, but my appointment time has already passed." Kira closed her eyes, feeling her chest passing heavily on her. "I know, Mom, I know," Kira said, trying to sound calm, but her voice cracked anyway. Is everything okay, Kira's mum asked, Can I still see the doctor today? “Please don't just worry, okay? I'm fixing it, I promise you." Her mum let out a small cough at the other end of the line, and it hit Kira harder than any words could. "Kira, don't stress yourself out, we'll figure something out," her mom said. But Kira cut her off quickly, gripping the phone tightly. "No, I've got this, Mom. Just get ready, I'll call you back." She hung up before her mom could say anything else. The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating. Kira slowly put down the phone and stared blankly at the pile of files in front of her. The office lights seemed too bright, and the air felt too thick. She leaned back in her chair running her hands through her hair, feeling her thoughts spiral out of control. No money, no time, and no way out. It was like she was trapped and cornered, with no one to turn to. Kira took a sharp breath and let it out slowly. Her office phone buzzed, but Kira was already lost in thoughts, losing sense of her current environment. Then Adrian came out of his office with some essential documents, standing tall and dominating before his desk. Kira didn't notice Adrien before, looking at her furiously. Then he slapped and yelled at her, showing no concern or emotions, “Are you going to sit here all day and do nothing?” Then he slammed the files onto the desk and stormed out.”
