Chapter 2

Before she could settle in, her office phone rang sharply. Kira hesitated for a moment, before reaching out, her fingers trembling as she picked up the phone, having a strange feeling that something was wrong, “Kira… come to my office. Now!.” The manager’s voice was tight, fraught with tension. She swallowed hard, her heart thumping. Something is wrong, I can feel it, Kira said to herself. As she walked towards the hallway, the hallway seemed longer than usual, the silence of her colleagues’ watchful stares pressed down on her. Kira knocked once before entering her manager's office. “Good morning, Mr. Charles,” Kira said carefully, with a smile on her face. Mr Charles didn’t look up, but flipped through a pile of papers with a grim intensity, as if he'd been looking for a missing report. Finally, he reached into his drawer and handed Kira a small envelope. “This is yours,” Mr Charles said. Kira’s hands trembled as she slowly opened it. $400. Her voice shook. “Sir… my salary is $750, why $400?” Mr. Charles’s eyes snapped toward her, sharp with burning anger. “This company is filing for bankruptcy. Investors have pulled out already. Everything that we built for years now, has collapsed. This is the end, Kira!,” he snapped, his voice echoing in the silent office. Kira felt the world tilt beneath her. The hope she had clung to her plan for her mother’s medical bills. Everything crumbled instantly, mother's doctor's appointment was today by 2pm. Kira stepped out of the office, leaving the old wooden door open, shoulders heavy and breath shallow, her trembling hands and distant gaze revealing a quiet, crushing loss o f hope.
