Chapter 14: Lawrence Devon

“Master, there’s someone who was following behind us,” Althea spoke in Kira’s mind. Kira paused for a moment and glanced sideways. She was currently on the streets, the night had already turned dark not so long ago. She was about to go to the location where Lawrence Devon is currently living. Her steps halted instantly. “Bariston, can you feel who the person following us is?” Bariston’s eyes turned grim instantly. He was on high alert the moment they left the palace. “Yes, Lady Kira. I can feel his presence,” he answered in a low voice. Kira slightly frowned, her eyes went dark as she observed that man’s location. “If I’m not mistaken, he must be sent by my beloved sister.” she paused and a smirk curled on her red lips, “You dared to spy on me?… Not a chance!” In a few seconds, her agile body stealthily dashed into a lane at the side. Bariston hurriedly followed her over. And then, they saw a silhouette of a man dashing toward the street where she had just stood. The man walked and searched for something in the crowd but failed to locate her location. But something catches Kira’s attention. She hadn’t seen that man before. “Bariston, do you know who that man is?” Kira lightly wrinkled her brows, eyes filled with curiosity. “This is the first time I also saw that man, Lady Kira. But I think he was not Lady Valerie’s henchman.” Bariston replied in a low voice. His gaze never left the spot where the man was standing earlier. “Why do you say so?” Bariston bowed his head in shame, “He is stronger than me, Lady Kira. Much stronger than I am. I think he is at least a 4th rank wolf. So, it’s impossible for Lady Valerie to have that kind of a strong subordinate.” Althea seconded on her mind, “Bariston is right, Master. That man’s strength was very strong. Although his strength is slightly weaker than your father, Alpha Javier, he could still cause a huge injury to him if they fought.” “Seems like I should raise my strength as fast as I can. People with stronger forces are starting to look for me.” her eyes flashing with determination. Bariston asked, “But Lady Kira, did you offend someone stronger? Why was he following you?” Aside from the people in the royal and noble family, he couldn’t think of anyone who would send someone that strong just to spy on his lady. And, a man as strong as him can even contend with their alpha, it’s a big question why he was discreetly following Lady Kira. That doesn’t make any sense at all. Kira clapped her hands and walked forward. “We can worry about that in the future. For now, let’s focus on the task we have in mind and we should be more discreet and careful in doing our things. It would be difficult if someone found out about our plans. It will ruin everything.” Kira slightly squinted her eyes, a dangerous glint flashed from her pupil. “But whoever that person is. He should make sure that he won’t ruin my plans and become a blocking wall for me. Or else, I will make him pay severely.” Bariston shivered after hearing the cold tone of his lady’s voice. He had already heard her speaking like that a couple of times already, but he still couldn't get used to it. He would feel afraid for no reason once he heard that tone. Adding to the fact that Lady Kira had an expressionless face while saying that. It’s like looking at a female demon who was thirsty for blood. “Let’s go. We still have matters to attend to.” After they crossed a few series of blocks, they finally reached the street going towards the entrance of the rear mountain. On the streets, fewer people are walking by and a lower number of stalls are set up on every sidewalk. It’s very different from how bustling the place where they came from. It’s evident that the people living here belonged to the lowest class, the poorest people in the castle were living here. Most of them were slaves and servants. They relied on their meager salary to survive every day. Fortunately, Kira and Bariston were dressed simply, and again, a cloak was covering Kira’s hair to hide their identities. As Kira walked past the street, they finally reached an old wooden house with a small backyard where vegetables were planted in it. Just by looking at the house, it’s clear that the person living there doesn’t have a good life. The roof had holes. Whenever there was a rainstorm, droplets of water would go inside. The windows were heavily damaged as well. Kira can’t believe that a person born into the Devon family is living in this kind of environment. Devon Family is known for its variety of businesses in the castle. They were merchants for centuries. Although they can’t be compared to noble families, they are still considered as above average since they are rich. Very rich. And they also have connections throughout the whole castle. That’s why when Franz Devon entered the training ground, he wasn’t dispatched to the barracks or to the borders. It’s because of his connection that he was stationed at the palace. His rank is much higher than those of guards on the borders. All in all, Franz didn’t suffer any hardship at all aside from the time when he was training to be a guard, since it was a necessity. He was pampered and he could get all the things he wanted. He can even dine at restaurants with skyrocketing prices and can wear clothes that a commoner can’t afford even if he uses his entire year of salary. Kira was quietly standing outside. The wind blows, making her dress sway with the breeze. Bariston was standing behind her with his eyes full of alertness. He still didn’t have any idea why his lady wanted to meet this man. Not a moment later, the door of the house opened and a man sitting in a wheelchair came into sight. His cold eyes widened in surprise when he saw two people standing outside. Just one look at them, he could tell that they weren’t simple people. “Who are you?” he asked coldly. He didn’t know what business they had with them. Bariston was surprised when he saw the face of the man in the wheelchair. It’s really the same with Franz Devon. They only differed in skin tone and body build. He is much thinner and paler compared to Franz. It must be because they were living in a completely different environment. When she saw that Lawrence Devon came out, she smiled and spoke softly, “It’s nice to meet you Mr. Lawrence Gartfield.” Lawrence didn’t use Devon’s family name. For him, he didn’t belong to that family… That family abandoned him when he was still a child because of his disability. He was using the last name of his nanny, Rose Gartfield. If not for her, he would have died a long time ago. But his nanny’s life didn’t last long either. When he reached the age of 14, his nanny died in an accident. From then on, he had been living all alone in this old house. He relied on the small vegetable garden in the yard to feed himself since he couldn’t work. If not because of the promise he made to his nanny before, he would have already killed himself. Lawrence was only living because of that promise. If one day he encountered an accident, he wishes that it would give him a quick death so that he can end his suffering. “I don’t know you… You should leave this place. We have nothing to talk about”. He didn’t want to speak anymore. He was about to close the door when Kira spoke once more, " I think we do have something to talk about, Mr. Lawrence… Devon.” Lawrence halted in his movement when he heard his real family name. He stared wide-eyed. “What?…” No one knew aside from the Devon Family and his nanny that he belonged to the Devon Family. So, how did this woman know about it? Kira’s lip curled into a meaningful. “I know who you are…” she paused for a while and continued, “So, shall we now have a talk, Mr. Devon?”
