Episode.2:A Night That Changed Everything

1681 Words
The cool night air hit Elena’s face as she stepped out of the restaurant building. The city lights blurred through the tears in her eyes, turning into glowing streaks of gold and white. She didn’t remember pressing the elevator button. She didn’t remember walking through the lobby. All she could feel was the crushing weight inside her chest. Her hands trembled as she wrapped her arms around herself. Three years. Three years of memories flooded her mind all at once. Daniel brought her coffee during long work nights. Daniel kissed her forehead and told her she was the only woman he wanted. Daniel promised that their future would be beautiful. Every memory now felt like a lie. Elena laughed weakly through her tears. “How stupid was I?” she whispered to herself. A few pedestrians walked past her, but no one paid attention to the girl standing alone on the sidewalk with tears running down her cheeks. The city was too busy to care about broken hearts. Her phone buzzed in her purse. Elena wiped her face quickly and pulled it out. The screen lit up with a message from Lila. Lila: “So?? Did he propose?? Tell me everything!!!” Elena stared at the message. Her chest tightened again. She didn’t know how to answer. What could she possibly say? No, he didn’t propose. He just broke my heart in front of his fiancée. Her fingers hovered over the screen before she finally typed. Elena: “No proposal.” Almost immediately, her phone rang. Lila. Elena hesitated before answering. “Hello?” she said softly. “WHAT HAPPENED?” Lila demanded instantly. “You were supposed to be celebrating right now!” Elena swallowed. “It’s over.” There was a long pause on the other side of the phone. “What do you mean it’s over?” Lila asked slowly. “He’s engaged.” Silence. Then— “WHAT?!” People nearby turned to look as Lila’s voice exploded through the phone. “To someone else?” she shouted. “Yes.” Lila sounded furious. “I swear if that man were standing in front of me right now—” “It’s okay,” Elena interrupted gently. But it wasn’t okay. Not even close. “Where are you?” Lila asked. “Outside the restaurant.” “Stay there. I'm coming.” “You don’t have to—” “I’m already grabbing my keys.” The call ended. Elena slipped her phone back into her purse. The streetlights flickered softly above her as cars passed by in steady streams. Everything looked normal. The world kept moving like nothing had happened. But Elena felt like her entire life had collapsed. She started walking slowly down the street, not really caring where she was going. Her heels clicked softly against the pavement. A cold breeze lifted strands of her hair. She replayed Daniel’s words in her head. "You misunderstood." "Things haven’t been working." "You weren’t supposed to see." Each sentence stabbed deeper than the last. Suddenly, Elena stopped walking. A strange feeling washed over her. Someone was watching her. She turned her head slightly. Across the street, a black car was parked near the curb. The windows were tinted, making it impossible to see inside. But something about it felt… deliberate. Like it had been there for a while. Elena frowned slightly. Maybe she was imagining things. Her mind was already overwhelmed. She shook her head and continued walking. The car didn’t move. Inside the vehicle, a man sat quietly in the back seat. His sharp eyes followed Elena’s figure as she walked down the street. His expression was unreadable. Beside him, his assistant glanced out the window. “Sir,” the assistant said cautiously, “should we leave?” The man didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he watched Elena pause under a streetlight. Her shoulders were tense. Her steps slow. Even from this distance, he could tell she had been crying. Interesting. Most people try to hide their pain. But she didn’t seem to care who saw it. Finally, the man spoke. “Who was the couple on the rooftop?” he asked calmly. “The man is Daniel Whitmore,” the assistant replied. “Investment analyst at Grant Holdings.” “And the woman?” “Sophia Langford. Daughter of the Langford Group president.” The man nodded slightly. A business alliance. That made sense. His gaze returned to Elena. “Who is the girl?” he asked. The assistant quickly checked his tablet. “Her name is Elena Carter. Junior editor at BrightPage Publishing.” The man leaned back slowly. “Elena Carter,” he repeated thoughtfully. The name lingered in the air. Outside, Elena sat down on a nearby bench, clearly exhausted. The man watched her for a moment longer. Then he spoke quietly. “Drive.” The engine started smoothly. The car began to move. But as it passed Elena, the man glanced at her one last time. Something about her intrigued him. Maybe it was the quiet strength in the way she held herself. Or maybe it was the way heartbreak hadn’t completely broken her. Whatever the reason, he had a feeling this wouldn’t be the last time he saw Elena Carter. And he was right. Because sometimes the most important people in our lives appear during our darkest moments. And neither of them knew it yet. But this night… Had just connected their futures. Elena sat quietly on the bench, staring at the ground. The city buzzed around her—cars passing, people laughing, music drifting from nearby restaurants—but it all felt distant, like she was watching the world from far away. Her mind kept replaying the same painful moment. Sophia lifting her hand. The diamond ring shining under the lights. He proposed last week. Elena closed her eyes tightly. How could someone move on that quickly? Three years together. Three years of love, plans, and promises. Had any of it been real? Her chest tightened again. She pressed her hands against her face, trying to calm herself. “Okay,” she whispered softly. “You’re going to be fine.” But the words sounded hollow. A few minutes later, headlights appeared at the end of the street. A small red car pulled up beside the sidewalk and stopped abruptly. The driver’s door swung open. “ELENA!” Lila rushed out of the car and ran toward her. The moment Lila saw Elena’s tear-streaked face, her expression changed from anger to concern. “Oh my God…” She immediately wrapped her arms around her. Elena tried to stay strong. She really tried. But the warmth of her best friend’s hug broke the last bit of control she had left. Tears spilled down her cheeks again. “He’s engaged,” Elena whispered weakly. Lila pulled back, her eyes blazing with fury. “I cannot believe that i***t!” She paced back and forth angrily. “Three years! THREE YEARS! And he replaces you in a week?” Elena wiped her face. “I guess I didn’t know him as well as I thought.” Lila stopped pacing and looked at her carefully. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Elena.” “But I trusted him.” “That’s not a crime,” Lila said firmly. Elena forced a small smile. “You always know what to say.” “Of course I do. That’s what best friends are for.” Lila crossed her arms and looked toward the restaurant building. “I should go up there and throw his drink in his face.” Elena quickly shook her head. “Please don’t.” “Why not? He deserves it!” “Because it won’t change anything.” Lila sighed heavily. “You’re too nice.” Maybe she was. Or maybe she was just too tired to fight. Lila gently took Elena’s hand. “Come on. Let’s go home.” Elena nodded. She stood slowly, her legs still shaky. They walked toward Lila’s car together. Just as Elena opened the passenger door, something caught her attention. Across the street, a sleek black car was slowly driving away. For a brief moment, she thought she saw someone sitting in the back seat. Watching her. But the car disappeared into traffic before she could see clearly. Elena frowned slightly. “Everything okay?” Lila asked. “Yeah,” Elena replied softly. Maybe it was just her imagination again. She slid into the passenger seat. The car pulled into the late-night traffic. For a while, neither of them spoke. The city lights flickered past the windows. Finally, Lila broke the silence. “You know what the worst part is?” she said. Elena looked at her. “What?” “That man never deserved you.” Elena stared out the window. Maybe Lila was right. But it didn’t make the pain disappear. After a few minutes, Lila suddenly said, “Wait.” “What?” “Did Daniel say why he suddenly got engaged?” Elena shook her head. “No.” “That’s suspicious.” “How?” “Because men like Daniel don’t suddenly fall in love and propose in one week.” Elena frowned. “What are you saying?” Lila’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “I think something else is going on.” Elena felt a small knot of curiosity form in her chest. “What do you mean?” Lila shrugged. “I don’t know yet. But trust me, rich families and business people don’t do anything without a reason.” Elena didn’t respond. But the thought stayed in her mind. Maybe there really was more to the story. Maybe Daniel’s sudden engagement wasn’t about love at all. And somewhere in the city, a powerful man named Adrian Knight was also thinking about her. Because sometimes fate begins with something as simple as two strangers crossing paths on a painful night. And neither of them knew it yet… But their lives were about to collide in ways neither of them expected.
