The days that followed after the funeral of the king were everything except peaceful. Lord Wilder and his family had spent more days than planned, staying at the palace and comforting the Queen and her son.
Lord Wilder had fought with his wife Lady Liz countless times without regard of where they had their verbal dispute. They fought at the dining hall, in the throne room, the royal garden, and many other places outside the palace.
Lady Liz wanted to return home with her husband and daughter, but Lord Wilder had refused to leave. He believed his presence was crucial, and he couldn’t abandon Queen Catherine to deal with the affairs of the kingdom on her own.
“Well, if you’re not going to leave with me, I’ll return home with Rose then,” Lady Liz cried.
“Good. This is what my brother would have wanted. To stay here, watch over the kingdom and his wife,” Lord Wilder said.
“His wife?” Lady Liz asked.
“And son. You didn’t let me finish my statement. I meant to say his wife and son,” Lord Wilder argued.
“Oh! I was sure you were done with that statement,” Lady Liz said.
“Even though I was, what’s wrong with that?” Lord Wilder asked.
“She is your brother’s wife—”
“That, she is. Wipe your mind of those filthy thoughts. I can’t believe what you’re implying, and all from a simple statement.”
“Whatever you’re planning, that’s your concern. I am leaving this instant.”
Rose barged into her parents' chamber. “Aren’t you both rather tired of fighting all the time? The whole palace staffs now see both of you as clowns for their amusement. I’m ashamed.”
“Good, Rose, you’re here. Get your things ready, we’re leaving immediately,” Lady Liz commanded.
“Leave?” Rose asked, confused.
“Yes, dear. We’re leaving now,” Lady Liz answered.
“But father said we will remain in the palace for the meantime,” Rose said.
“Oh! He did? Well, father was wrong. We’re leaving this instant,” Lady Liz said as she walked over to Rose.
“I’m not leaving with you, mother. I’m staying here with my father,” Rose shrugged.
“Rose... we’re leaving the palace this instant.”
“No, mother. I’m staying with my father,” Rose argued.
“Let her stay dear, she’ll be with me. And when we’re ready to come back home, we will,” Lord Wilder smiled as he pulled Rose closer to him.
Lady Liz was shocked and lost for words, she turned away with her servant, who carried her things down to the carriage while Rose and Lord watched from the balcony as she left.
“Father?” Rose turned to Lord Wilder. “Why didn’t we go with Mother?”
“You see, Rose,” Lord Wilder smiled, his hands gently rubbing her hair. “There is something I must do there, something very important to me, my brother, and the rest of the kingdom. If I leave now, I’ll never have this opportunity again. But you can always return home if you’d like.”
“No... no father. I want to stay here, with you. I feel like a real princess here,” Rose smiled.
“Of course, a princess,” Lord Wilder chuckled softly as Rose hurried away. “A real-life princess.”
A year had passed since Lady Liz abandoned her husband, unable to stomach his cruel ambitions. She left while Lord Wilder remained in the palace with his daughter Rose, but the palace was still shrouded in grief.
Lord Wilder’s obsession with Queen Catherine had only grown stronger with time. He showered her with promises of comfort and compassion, feigning a deep sympathy for her loss. But his true intentions were far from pure. He sought to seduce her, to wear down her defenses and claim her as his own.
Queen Catherine, however, proved to be a formidable opponent. Despite Lord Wilder’s best efforts, she remained loyal to her late husband and the memories of him, refusing to break his trust. Lord Wilder’s advances were met with a steadfast refusal, and he was left to seethe in frustration.
But Lord Wilder was not one to be deterred. After a year of failed attempts to win Queen Catherine’s affections, he turned his attention to a more sinister pursuit. He began to secretly gather support among the nobles, whispering promises of power and wealth to those who would support his claim to the throne.
His goal was clear. To steal the throne from Queen Catherine’s young son, the rightful heir. Lord Wilder’s ambition knew no bounds, and he would stop at nothing to achieve his twisted desires.
“Father?” Rose said as she walked into her father’s chambers. “You sent for me.”
“Yes, I did,” Lord Wilder turned to welcome his daughter. “I needed to have a private conversation with you.”
“What is it, father?” Rose asked.
“How close are you to your cousin?”
“Prince Henry?”
“Yes.”
Rose’s heart jumped. “Why do you ask, Father?”
“I haven’t been fully honest with you about why we’re still in the palace, and I think it’s time to tell you about it. I need your help to accomplish this, Rose. Can you help me?”
“Anything for you, father.”
“I want the throne.”
“The throne?” Rose asked.
“Yes, the throne,” Lord Wilder answered.
“But Prince Henry is the heir to the throne. How can you become king if there already is an heir?” Rose asked again.
“That’s why I called you privately. I need your help getting rid of him.” Lord Wilder grinned.
“This is a lot to ask for, and how do I even do that?” Rose asked.
“I understand, dear. This is so much to ask of my little girl, but who else can I trust with such a task instead of my own flesh and blood? My most precious of all. You, Rose. I need you to calm down and think about this. If I become king, you will become a princess. A real-life princess, just like you wanted, and everybody will be under you. You’ll live in the palace, and you’ll be the most powerful princess,” Lord Wilder continued.
“Yes.... It would be nice to be a princess, Father,” Rose smiled. “But still, father, I don’t know how to get rid of Prince Henry.”
“You just leave that to me. All I wanted was your acceptance of my goal. I will come up with a plan very soon, and you will be instructed on what to do. But for now, return to what you were doing. No one must know about this.”
“Of course, father.”
