The sun's warm rays filtered through the forest, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. Aria and Asher sat together, their backs against the sturdy trunk of an ancient tree. The gentle rustle of leaves and the sweet songs of birds filled the air, a soothing balm for their weary souls.
After a long journey away from Brindlemark, they had finally found refuge in the heart of the forest. The events of the previous day still lingered in their minds. Yet, as they sat together, the tranquility of the forest seemed to wash away the tension, leaving only a profound sense of connection.
Asher turned to Aria, his eyes filled with a deep longing. "Aria, I'm sorry," he said, his voice low and husky. "I should have told you about the imprinting sooner. I was afraid of scaring you away. Afraid that you might reject me. But I realize now that was a mistake."
Aria's gaze met his, her expression softening. "You don't have to apologize, Asher. I understand why you didn't tell me."
Asher's face drew closer, his breath whispering against Aria's skin. "I want you to know, Aria, that I love you. I want to protect you, to keep you safe from harm. You are my mate, my everything."
Aria's heart skipped a beat as she searched Asher's eyes. She saw the sincerity there, the depth of his emotion. And in that moment, she knew she felt the same way.
"I love you too, Asher," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
As they sat there, wrapped in each other's gaze, the world around them melted away. Both were lost in their own little bubble of love and connection, a sense of belonging that neither of them had ever experienced before.
"But what about the warning from Gareth?" Aria asked, concerned.
"What warnings?"
"Forbidden love, catastrophic consequences," she muttered. "My mum, before she died, placed a curse on the people of Ravenswood. She said great danger shall befall the land. What if our love would bring about the fulfillment of the curse?"
"Aria," he said. His voice was soft as he tried to soothe her uneasy feelings. "I don't think that relates to us. But even if it does, does it matter? Besides, you want to avenge your mother's death."
Aria smiled. "Great protector of the humans. Why are you suddenly interested in my quest for revenge? Aren't you supposed to talk me out of it?"
"I would have," he said, his voice low. "But you come first to me before anyone else. I'll stand with you."
"Asher—"
Asher's expression turned reassuring. "We'll face whatever comes our way, together," he promised. "I'll never let anything come between us, Aria. You're mine, and I'm yours."
Aria's heart swelled with emotion as she looked at Asher. She knew that she could trust him, that he would always be there to protect and love her. And in that moment, she knew she would do anything to be with him, no matter the cost.
Asher's eyes narrowed, his gaze intense. "Aria, I need to know more about Rose Wilder. Who is she, and why is she after you?"
Aria's expression turned somber, her eyes clouding over. "Rose... I met her on my 20th birthday, when I snuck out into the village. She approached me, and we instantly became friends... or so I thought."
Aria's voice cracked, and she paused, collecting her thoughts.
"I trusted her, confided in her about my powers. But she... she betrayed me. When my mother came looking for me, Rose reported her presence to her father, Lord Wilder. He had my mother captured and burned at the stake."
Aria's eyes flashed with anger and pain.
"I tried to avenge her that same day, but the guards at Rose's house stopped me. But I managed to escape when they were distracted."
Asher's face twisted in shock and outrage. "Aria, I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve that."
Aria's gaze met Asher's, her eyes searching for reassurance. "I've been running ever since, trying to stay one step ahead of Rose and her family. I don't understand how she became a princess."
"What do you mean?"
"Before I escaped, the palace messenger came bearing news of the king's death."
"Does it mean Lord Wilder inherited the throne?"
"I don't think so. A new king hasn't been announced yet," Aria said. "I'm just glad I have you, Asher."
Asher's grip on Aria's hand tightened. "We'll face whatever comes our way, together."
Aria's gaze turned thoughtful, her eyes locked on Asher's. "Asher, I've been thinking... maybe it's time for you to return to your pack."
Asher's expression turned wary, his brow furrowing. "My pack? You mean the Lunar Claw Pack?"
Aria nodded. "I don't know its name, but yes. It might be the only place left for us to go. If you ascend as the alpha, you'll be able to protect me even more."
Asher's face twisted in concern. "Aria, if what Gareth said is true, that a wolf shifter and a witch can't truly be mates, then that means you won't be safe in my pack."
Aria's expression turned reassuring, her voice calm. 'Nothing will happen, Asher. You don't know how powerful you are. And I'm just as powerful. We should be focused on getting you back to your pack. You have a destiny to fulfil, and getting your position as their rightful alpha is a step towards your destiny."
Asher's eyes searched Aria's face, his gaze lingering on her determined expression. "But what about the risks? What if my pack doesn't accept you?"
Aria's smile was confident. "They'll have no choice but to follow their alpha's every command. And that's you. Trust me, Asher. You are. An alpha."
Asher's expression softened, his eyes filled with emotion. "You really believe that, don't you?"
Aria nodded. "I do. And I'll be there to support you."
Asher's face twisted in a mixture of emotions. "Aria, I... I don't know what to say. I want to protect you, to keep you safe. But I also want to be with you, to explore this bond between us."
Aria's expression turned gentle, her voice barely above a whisper. "You don't have to choose, Asher. We can have both. We can be together, and we can face whatever challenges come our way. As long as we're together."
Asher's eyes locked on Aria's, his gaze burning with intensity. He wanted to pull Aria closer to him for a deep, longing kiss, but he had to control his urge, so he didn't look like he was forcing things with her.
Aria's curiosity got the better of her as she leaned in closer to Asher. "Asher, can I ask you something?"
Asher's eyes met hers, his expression open and inviting. "Of course, Aria. What's on your mind?"
Aria's cheeks flushed slightly as she hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel... different when I'm around you. Like my heart is racing, and I feel all fluttery inside."
Asher's eyes softened, his expression gentle. "I feel it too, Aria."
Aria's brow furrowed, her curiosity deepening. "What do you think it means?"
Asher's gaze drifted away, his voice thoughtful. "Well, Aria. It's not something I can explain to you with words. I have to show you."
Aria's eyes locked on Asher's. "Okay. Show me then."
"Wait—what?"
"You said you'd prefer to show me. So, I'm waiting. Show me. I really want to understand what it is I feel whenever I'm around."
"Right now?"
"Yes, Asher. Right now," she said, her voice soft. "I have never felt this way before, and I don't know if it's because you're a man, because all the time I've been with you was the first time I've ever been so close to a man. I can't help it, but it feels like... like my body is responding to yours or something."
Asher looked away for a moment, his eyes wandering around the forest before snapping back to Aria's. His eyes now burned with intensity. "Aria, I..." He paused, his voice low and husky. "I think we should be careful. I don't want to rush into anything.
Aria's face flushed, her eyes dropping. "I understand. I just... I wanted to understand what's happening between us."
"And you will. Very soon," Asher assured her. "But when the moment is right, I'll show you. I promise."
The air between them was charged with tension, their hearts pounding in unison. They sat there, suspended in a moment of raw emotional connection, the world fading into the background.
"Tomorrow, we journey back to my pack."
"You've agreed to it?"
"Yes, Aria. I want to believe what you said about me being an alpha, and I need to stop Rowan from taking my rightful place in the pack.
