He had rushed all the way from Moonlight Ridge to see me and Alpha Marcus, carrying local specialties just before his accident.
But when l arrived, all l found was chaos and my father's bloodied face.
This was the first time Alpha Marcus had visited my father in the hospital since the accident.
"Father, are you feeling better?'
He put down the fruit he was holding, concern written all over his face.
I coldly stood up to get some water,unwilling to stand beside him.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed him exhale in relief.
When l returned, he was holding my father's hand, expressing gratitude,with red eyes, as if he had just been crying.
Upon seeing me, he hurriedly made an excuse about being busy with work and left.
My father, trembling, grasped my hand and said weakly, "lt's alright; if you two can live happily, that's enough."
I was puzzled, thinking he must have sensed the tension between Alpha Marcus and me.
Then, when l called the enforcement officer handling the case, the response surprised me. "Didn't you agree to settle? Your father confirmed it himself.”
Tension flared at my temples as l trembled with anger, the wolf spirit within me howled.
I recalled the day Alpha Marcus had been there, gripping his phone and holding it to my father's ear-everything became clear.
The officer played a recording of my father's voice for me, shaking his head. "That's your father's voice, and he signed the settlement. No way this could be faked, right? Your family really is something else-one minute pursuing accountability, the next not And Alpha Marcus is running around helping the other side-
His words stalled, and t lowered my head fists clenched.
Selena had transferred the compensation amount directly to my phone after following the procedures,smirking as she leaned next to me. "At the end of the day, Alpha Marcus cares too much about me. l told him l could pay for it, but he insisted on sending it my way."
I couldn't help it-l lifted my hand.
"Rita!" Alpha Marcus suddenly appeared, grabbing my hand firmly.
He shot a furious glance at Selena.
"Rita, let's go visit your father in the hospital."
l was about to speak when Selena interjected.
She pouted, looking at Alpha Marcus."Alpha Marcus, my wolf spirit is calling for you. Can you take me home?"
Alpha Marcus hesitated for just a second but then nodded at her.
I snorted, pulling my hand away and turning to leave.
On my way, l received a text from Alpha Marcus.
"My Luna, i'll be there shortly.
But as night fell and the moon hung high l still didn't see him at the hospital.
My phone buzzed incessantly, and not wanting to disturb m father's rest I walked out into the hallway to answer
it was Alpha Marcus calling.
As soon as l picked up, l was met with heavy, hurried breaths on theother end.
'Selena, are you wearing the one l got you?"
"of course, I'm wearing both-top and bottom.”
“...”
The sounds of gasping continued unabated, and my heart ached painfully.
I thought i had long since familiarized myself with his betrayals and had moved on from my feelings for Alpha Marcus, but the bond between us as mates still made the anguish of betrayal hit me like a tidal wave.
