chapter 6

Alpha Marcus was momentarily taken aback, frozen in place.  My gaze was utterly devoid of emotion, yet my lips curved into a faint smile. "One night of mating wasn't enough for me. Do you wish to stand by and watch me mate with him again?"  Alpha Marcus's expression darkened, a rare sight.  He remained rooted to the spot, his lips trembling slightly, yet no words came forth.  Since he wouldn't leave, I didn't look at him either.  Turning away, I pulled back the covers. My expression remained impassive as I met the male werewolf's gaze, cupping his chin firmly before leaning down to kiss him.  Unlike yesterday's hazy encounter, I savoured the taste of this male werewolf – distinct from Alpha Marcus – with intense focus.  In that instant, I caught that same, utterly captivating scent from the night before, screaming at me to be closer, much closer to this werewolf before me.  I sensed it: the werewolf Alpha Marcus had inadvertently brought here was my destined mate.  Alpha Marcus stood rooted to the spot, his fists clenched so tightly the veins stood out.  I knew he felt it too—the same agonising betrayal I did.  Only when the incessant ringing of his mobile phone finally broke the silence did he manage to steady his trembling hand to answer it, nearly dropping the device to the floor in the process.  The call switched to speakerphone, and Selena's loathsome voice filled the room.  "Alpha Marcus, where are you? My wolf is calling for you too—the longing is unbearable!"  I closed my eyes tightly.  "I—"  "Go outside to take it!"  Startled by my tone, Alpha Marcus hit the end call button. Whether it was my first display of harshness that frightened him, or he truly couldn't wait to see Selena, he left without even closing the door.  Fortunately, he'd already booked out this entire floor, so no one would come up unless absolutely necessary.  Time ticked by, and when I awoke, night had fallen.  A pair of eyes watched me in the darkness.  I lay flat on the bed, utterly drained.  Gazing into the void, I stared blankly for a long while.  A strong arm suddenly reached out before my eyes.  "Does it hurt?"  I turned my head away.  "Why did you agree to him?"  He looked at me in surprise. "What?"  I didn't answer, my eyes fixed on him.  "Oh, you mean that. I'm broke, you see. I need money." He gave me an indifferent smile.  My voice dropped as I rose, preparing to leave this bed in utter disarray.  "Don't think I'm older than you, but yesterday... it was my first time mating," he suddenly spoke up.  "I'm glad it was with you—my destined mate."  I dressed calmly, yet heard a hint of sorrow in his voice.  "I'm bankrupt. My grandmother is ill. She raised me. I can't abandon her. I must save her."  My body froze stiff behind him.  I recalled that torn-up final work. I too had been raised by my grandmother; everything about her held profound meaning for me.  I lowered my gaze. "Hand over your phone."  "Are you adding me?" he asked, handing over his phone with unexpected cheer.  I added his contact details and transferred him some money.  "Is this enough for your grandmother's treatment? Don't do things like this again. Get dressed and leave quickly."  When I emerged after washing up, he was indeed gone from the bed.  Just as I was about to leave, a small note on the table caught my eye.  "My name is Ryan."  After reading it, I intended to crumple it up and discard it, yet somehow, holding it in my palm, it felt like a ball of fire, burning hot to the touch.  I slipped it into my coat pocket and turned to leave the hospital room.
