Chapter 39

1179 Words

Third person POV After seeing Noelle off, Raina returned to her room. The walk-in closet stood like a quiet museum of a marriage that had never quite lived. Shelves lined with velvet boxes, silk ribbons, polished leather… all the “gifts” Harrison had given her over the years. They came like clockwork. After every argument. After every moment he chose Sophie. Guilt, wrapped in diamonds. Raina stood there for a long moment, then moved. One by one, she took them down. Necklaces. Bracelets. Handbags still stiff from disuse. She packed them into a suitcase with steady hands, her expression calm, almost detached. She used to think they meant something. That maybe, beneath the distance, he was trying. But disappointment, repeated enough times, doesn’t break loudly. It hollows quietly.
