Sophie's fingers dug into Adrian's flesh as she took hold of his arm. "Avoid doing this."
Adrian's muscles were stiff, his jaw folded. He avoided looking into her eyes.
She stepped in front of him and murmured, "Adrian," making him turn to face her. "Avoid becoming consumed by retaliation."
For a brief moment, Sophie glimpsed something broken and raw when he finally raised his eyes. "I lost everything to him." He spoke in a raspy, painful voice. "Sophie, he killed them." My folks. As though it were merely a game, he sat there and looked me in the eye.
