As far as I was concerned the clue to whoever it was who was writing those letters to Melissa lay with the kidnapping and murder of Pauline Jenner. Everything this Frederick first revealed centred around that crime. Anything else was either red herrings or acts he had subsequently learned of, and where was the best place to hear criminals romancing their tales of criminality? Why, prison, of course. Twenty minutes after I made contact with Adam, I answered my phone in Lavington Street and heard Serena Ellis on the other end of the line.
“Good morning, Mr Somerset! I was asked to call you. Unfortunately I have very little on the names you gave me. I haven't had sufficient time to gather enough for a full report.”
“I didn't expect one yet, Commander. I want you to look
