Chapter 11: The second spy

/-Raizan-/ The sight of her wound infuriates me, not because it was serious but because it wasn't and yet I felt as though something tiny and hot was poking my heart. It made no sense. I had seen females torn apart in battlefields. I had buried warriors, friends, and even kins with wounds worse than just a shallow cut. But the single drop of blood I saw in her palm made my chest tighten in a way I hated. So, before I knew it, I was already tending to her wounds, something I had never done in my entire life. Something I had been trying to avoid. I clenched my jaws slightly, perceiving her floral scent that permeated across the room. I hated how much her scent was getting to me, and how it made me want to get closer to her. Since this woman arrived, I noticed that I have hated a lot of things. And as someone who had always been calm and collected, it was a blow to feel so much for her. She hissed slightly, and I quickly lessened the force I was using even though my movements were awkward. She still had that slight tremble to her body. I hated that she was afraid of me. “I… I didn't mean to.” She stammered. “It slipped.” I furrowed my brows but proceeded to wrap a thin fabric around her wound before retreating. “Do not touch anything in here again.” She nodded, “Yes, Alpha King.” Alpha King… It sounded odd coming from her, but wasn't that how I had always been addressed? “What is your name?” I asked, feigning calmness. “Sabrina, my name is Sabrina.” Just then, a knock sounded from the door, and it creaked open to reveal my beta, Theron. “My Lord.” I nodded once, “Speak.” “We found the spy.” He said slowly. That snapped me out of whatever haze I was in before. “Where?” I asked, already approaching him. “In the lower cells. He was trying to infiltrate into the dungeons to free one of the prisoners before he was intercepted.” He explained briefly, not going into much detail as he glanced at Sabrina. I turned back to her and said, “Don't wander off.” With that, I walked past Theron and left the study room, taking two steps at a time.A few days ago, a patrol squad disappeared near the outer borders. Their bodies were later found, ripped apart but not eaten. Only a set of people would resort to such violent and wild means. We call them rogues. A group of people banished from their packs due to some reasons and had the motive of leading all Virekan packs. After Sabrina's attack, I had assigned Theron to make some findings, and it was later concluded that there was a spy amidst us, one who had sold out the information of her being here. Soon, I walked down the stairs leading to the lower cells and watched as the guard situated at the small gate bowed swiftly before pushing the gates open. The thick, pungent smell of blood and mud attacked my nostrils in an instant, but my expression remained neutral as Theron quickly led the way to the farthest corner of the lower cells. The smell only grew thicker the deeper we advanced into the dimly lit cells before arriving towards a smaller one. Theron swung the iron bars open to reveal a man strung between two metal posts. His shirt hung in shreds, torn and bloody, and from the exposed skin, not a single part of his body was spared. His face, bruised and swollen, was lifted and when he saw me, his eyes dilated with fear. Fair enough. I stepped in slowly, and he tried to retreat, the chains clinking softly, but found himself unable to. “Who sent you?” I asked in a low voice, but it echoed off the walls of the cell. The man's throat bobbled, he did not respond. I took another step forward, enough to intimidate him with my aura, and I watched as his pupils shrank. “I won't repeat myself. Who sent you?” The man swallowed hard, his cracked lips parting, “I… don't know his name; nobody does.” I shifted back quietly, “Wrong answer.” He flinched and quickly said, “I swear! No one has ever seen his face, he hides it.” “And, you all never hesitated to work for him?” I asked again. I watched as a look of reverence flashed past his eyes and he said, "No, he's unlike any rogue we've ever seen. He's strong, so powerful that it borders on the verge of monstrousness. As a new rogue, I am unable to refute his orders and had to enter the pack mansion with a disguise.” New rogues are Virekans who just became rogues. They are the perfect choice for spies because they still had the fresh blood of a normal Virekan in them. Unlike those who have been rogues for years. However, the fact that rogues had a new leader was definitely not good news, and my face grew grim at the thought. “Were you the only one sent?” I asked again, and he hesitated this time. But, not for long. “No…no. There's another.” He whispered the reply, and my face darkened. “Who is it?” “I have no idea. I don't know their identity because I have never met them.” Theron cut in, “How do you communicate and receive instructions from this new leader of yours?” “Ravens, black ravens. They drop the message in a place close to the Southern watch tower.” He replied tremblingly. I turned to Theron, “Seal that area, no one gets near it without my approval and capture any raven you catch sight of. Furthermore, check every rank and post; make sure you find this spy.” “Yes Alpha.” With nothing left to do, I turned to leave. “Alpha, what should we do about him?” Theron asked, pointing to the spy. I replied with it turning back, “Keep him alive. Barely.”
