Alina
I wake up early in the morning. I haven't slept much due to my mind still thinking. I can also feel that my dragon is agitated. So I decided to just get up. I walk out to where Sapphire is and she is anxiously moving around. She keeps sniffing and looking towards the sky.
“Sapphire, what are you looking for?”
I walk over to her and she gets in front of me protectively.
“My dragon is acting similarly. I can’t figure out what is wrong” says Elric as he walks over. He is still bandaged and I doubt that he is supposed to be up and out of bed yet.
“Elric...you should be…”
“In bed, I know, but I couldn't stay. Something is coming and I can feel it.”
I simply nod.
“Are you okay?” he asked me.
“You just almost died. You’re still bandaged and your arm is in a sling and you’re asking me about my well-being?”
He smiles at me,
“Sorry, old habits die hard. You just found out about us, your accident, and on top of that, your family was attacked. I want to help... even if it's just as a friend. We were friends before we were ever an us. I’m just happy to be able to talk to you again. I’ve missed my friend. Not just my fiancee.”
Can someone really be this selfless?
“Elric, I’ve decided that you are too good to be true and there is no way that we were ever engaged,” I say with a smile.
Elric laughs hard.
“Too good to be true? I’ll take that as a compliment then.”
Just then it feels like the temperature around us warms up and I feel a strong gust of wind pass over us. Both of our dragons get in front of us.
I look to the north and I see three dragons flying towards us with riders on them.
“At the ready!” shouts Elric and men start getting ready to defend the border.
As they fly towards us, I see one of them is a woman. She has a long grey braid and I feel like I’m seeing an older version of my mother. Her dragon is the same color as Sapphire. To her right, is a younger man with long white hair, and to her left is an older man in armor.
“King Elric, don’t attack! She is family!” says my mother as she is running towards us.
“Queen Marie, Are you sure?” asks Elric.
My mother nods.
“I was sent a note by fire last night. I didn’t realize that they would be coming for her so soon though.”
“Coming for who?” asks Elric.
My mother’s face gets sad.
“No!!! There is no way in hell that they will have her. We just got her back.” says Elric and he stands in front of me.
Oh, my Goddess. They are coming for me, but why?
“Elric, I don’t think that we can stop this.” says my mother. She keeps looking at the number of men continuing to gather on the shore.
“Well we will try, and they will explain themselves, or I will burn them to the ground. I failed her once before. I’d rather die before I let that happen again.”
He lifts his hand. The men gathering leave a space for the dragons to land, but keep their weapons ready to fire.
The woman with the grey braid is the first to speak.
“Is this how you uncivilized humans greet a Goddess? With your weapons drawn!! I am the Goddess Lahamu! I’m here to take my great-granddaughter to the training that she is due. I have given you human’s enough time with her. ”
“Like hell you are. I am King Elric and I don’t give a damn who you are. If you need to train her then you can do so here.”
The woman with the grey braid smirks. “Ah, so much fire coming from the Ice King. I see that her fire has started to spread to you.” She says this and gestures to me. “Your grandfather was a pain in my *ss. I’m not surprised that you are too. If your grandfather hadn’t been a dear friend of mine, I would have had my dragon burn you to the ground where you stand.”
She dismounts from her dragon. I’m surprised by how young she looks. If this was my great-grandmother. Then she has to be hundreds of years old and outside of the grey hair, she looks like my mother’s age. Her two companions dismount from their dragons and the younger one keeps eyeing me.
“I’m guessing that you have extra rooms in that shack that you call a castle?” says my grandmother.
“Yes, I’ll have rooms prepared for you and your companions”, says Elric. I see a servant head to the castle.
“What do I call you?” I ask.
This is the first time that I see the woman with the grey braid smile.
“Grandmother will be fine.”
I smile back and come around Elric to stand next to my grandmother.
“Also, King of Ice, let me know when you would like to know more about your past. You have much to learn as well. Your PTSD can be dealt with easily as well. Just let me know when.”
I watch Elric’s brow furrow with confusion.
“Come, let's eat. It was a long flight.” says my Grandmother and we all head inside.
“You look so much like your grandfather. Your green eyes, your light hair. It’s all very striking. Those all came from my late husband. I see him in every generation of grandchildren, but I see it most in you.” says my grandmother as we start to walk towards the castle.
“How did he die?” I ask before thinking.
I watch her face take on a sad expression.
“My mother, when we fought the chaos that she was trying insight here, she managed to kill him.”
“...wait… you’re Tiamat’s daughter? The one that gave us dragon’s? How… how are you still alive?” I ask generally confused.
She lightly chuckled, “ Oh granddaughter of mine, you have much to learn. Dragon Daughters don’t age as fast. Whoever you will marry will also inherit that trait. It comes from being a part goddess. Are you still engaged to the young Ice King over there?” she gestures towards Elric who had walked ahead and was talking to a general of his.
“Uh, no, I had an accident and it affected my memory. So it was called off. Why do you call him the Ice King?”
“That is a pity…. If I had been able to train you younger. Your accident never would have happened. Like me, Elric’s great grandfather had dragons. His dragon was cold-blooded and had ice instead of fire. That is how he came to live here. His cold-blooded dragon craved the warm weather here. While he was here, he fell in love with one of the royal daughters.”
“Why don’t they follow the trend of only their son’s being born with a dragon? I get why I have a dragon. It comes from you, but their princesses were born with dragons.”
“A Strong mother. Dragon blood thrives within strong women. Their mother was strong enough to birth more than one dragon.”
“Why are they elemental now, instead of just ice?”
“An ice dragon is an elemental dragon, but who chooses only ice. Their dragons could choose to be ice dragons anytime that they want….You’re asking a lot of questions about someone that you are no longer engaged to.” says my grandmother with a smirk.
I blush, realizing that she is right.
“I’m just curious...some things don’t seem to line up.”
“Everything with dragons has a reason for being. After your training finishes, you will comprehend much more than you do now.
