Episode 9, Daughter of the goddess Tiamat

It’s dark now as we continue to fly west. I realized, after we passed over our farmland,  that we were headed to La Mer. It was too windy for us to talk, but as we flew, the nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach was getting worse.

Who attacked us and why? There was an attempt on my life. Were they after me or my entire family? I sigh as the smell of the ocean reaches my nose. We’re over the ocean now and I can see the faint lights of their castle. We both lead our dragons to the courtyard and I see King Hugh heading towards us. 

“What’s wrong? What has happened?” asked Hugh. 

“We were attacked. Our servants got us out. Those who were attacking us came without any royal colors to distinguish themselves” said my father, as we landed in their courtyard.

“No colors? So this was an assassination attempt. I will head inside and send part of our army as reinforcements.” said King Hugh as he rushed back inside.

My father and I both dismount and my father reaches up to help my mother down. As soon as her feet touch the ground she grabs her side. I can see blood soaking through the side of her dress. My father picks her up bridal style and we start to rush inside.

“Mother, were you stabbed?” I ask. 

“I wasn’t… but my dragon was.”

“How is this..?”

“Alina! There is no time. We need to get your mother to a doctor” said my father before I could ask any more questions. 

Queen Lillian rushes up to us and leads my parents into a room.

“Emily has already gone to get the doctor,” said Queen Lillian as she grabs a towel and puts pressure on my mother’s side.

“Marie, How do we stop this from happening? It usually takes weeks for a royal to be affected by their dragon’s injuries” asked Queen Lillian.

“There is no stopping it. If my dragon dies then I die with her” says my mother with a labored deep breath.

“The women in our lineage aren’t just dragon owners, we’re dragon tamers. We come from a daughter of the goddess Tiamat”

“Tiamat...the goddess of dragon’s herself?” I ask quickly.

“Yes, the princess wanted to escape her mother. Her mother was also the goddess of chaos. So the princess she married a royal….. One of our kings. Her mother, wanting to create chaos for her daughter, so she gave all of the royal families a dragon. That’s how the realm of Royame received their dragons, but the blood of the goddess of dragons still runs through our veins and the veins of our daughters. That’s why Alina…..why at six, you could do with your dragon...what most people spend their lifetime trying to achieve. With that connection comes a loyal dragon, but with that connection, you take on their injuries and their fate.” said my mother between labored breaths.

The doctor rushes in and behind him came Elric.

“What happened to your mother? Was she stabbed?” asked Elric as he neared me. 

“No she wasn’t, but her dragon was, We had to leave her dragon behind because one of her wings was injured in a fight”

I watched as understanding dawned on him as to what was about to happen. I watched as his expression went from understanding to determined.

“I can save your mother’s dragon,” said Elric as he turned to leave.

“Son no! You are our only heir… I have no one to replace you!” said King Hugh as he tried to grab his son’s shoulders.

“You know as well as I do that my dragon can win.” Said Elric

“But son you’re my..”

“I am not your only heir!” let out Elric as he looked over to his sisters.

“I am king now…. and I do not take orders from you,” asserted Elric as he shook off his father's hold and ran toward his dragon.

“He is going on a suicide mission. One man and one dragon can’t win against an entire army! You have to go stop him..” said my father.

King Hugh sighed, “The boy is right. He is a man now and the king here. This is not a suicide mission. Although I fear for his safety, he may survive. Our dragons are not like yours. They are elemental. Elric’s dragon is unique. Water and fire aren’t the only elements that he can bend….he can also bend time.”

“Bend time? How is that even possible?” I asked, shocked.

“I’m not sure. I just know what I have seen. Elric signed himself up for the knight trials. As many young royal boys do. He eventually won the entire tournament. After he had won he turned his back on his opponent. His opponent tried to stab him in his back, but before he could, Elric’s dragon took off the young royals head and the head of his dragon. No one saw what happened...Except for Elric. They’re able to move in between the minutes and seconds together. I don’t know how else to explain it.”

Just then everything became too much for young Ava and she started crying on the spot.

“Dearest daughter of mine, take the young one out of here. This is too much for her” said my mother to me.

I know exactly what she is doing. If my mother dies, and dies a painful death, she doesn’t want me anywhere near her. I came up to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek before I left. She gives me a pained smile and I take Ava and Emily with me to the other side of the castle.
