It was a simple room, an office with a desk and chairs. A neatly stacked bookshelf along the far wall with a chest to one side. Then there was the wash basin near the locked door and a lounging couch. From where she stood, she could see a second door left slightly ajar but the room beyond was cast into the darkness of the world beyond midnight. The glow of the firelight and candles failed to reach beyond the desk and couch and it was hard to make out George’s expression. Especially when he stood with his back to her with his hands pressed against the flat edge of the desk. His head bowed as though a heavy weight rested on his shoulders.
