Chapter two: the unspoken pull

674 Words
Amina woke up with the dawn call to prayer echoing through the hostel. Her roommate, Halima, was still curled up under her blanket, fast asleep. The room was quiet except for the faint buzz of traffic outside. Amina sat on her prayer mat, whispering softly, asking Allah for strength. But in the middle of her prayers, Daniel’s face flashed in her mind the way he had brushed her cheek the night before, the way his lips lingered on her forehead as though he was afraid she would disappear. She squeezed her eyes shut. Ya Allah, forgive me. I don’t want to fall too deep. By afternoon, she was restless. Halima noticed. “You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” Zainab teased, raising an eyebrow while adjusting her hijab in front of the mirror. Amina blushed. “I’m not.” “You are,” halima pressed, smiling knowingly. “The way you act after you see him… it’s written all over your face.” Amina shook her head, embarrassed. She couldn’t explain the way Daniel made her heart beat faster, how his silence spoke louder than words. ⸻ Later that evening, Daniel showed up outside her hostel with his car. He didn’t text beforehand he never did when he wanted it to be a surprise. Amina’s heart skipped when she saw him leaning casually against his car, holding a small paper bag. “You’ll catch a cold waiting like that,” she scolded softly as she approached him. Daniel smiled, his eyes lighting up. “I wanted to see your face first. Here He handed her the bag. Inside was her favorite chocolate and a little note folded neatly. For the girl who prays for me more than I pray for myself. Amina’s throat tightened. She looked up at him, blinking fast. “Daniel…” “What?” he asked softly, brushing a strand of hair back under her scarf. “You make it so hard for me to leave.” He gave a small laugh. “Good. I don’t want you to leave. They went for a drive, ending up at a quiet spot near the lake. The city lights shimmered in the water, and Amina felt cocooned in the moment. Daniel played soft music in the car, nothing too loud, just enough to fill the silence. “Talk to me,” he finally said, his voice low. “Every time we’re together, I feel like you carry the whole world in your chest but won’t let me in.” Amina fiddled with her fingers. “You wouldn’t understand.” “Try me.” Her eyes burned as she whispered, “Every time I come back from seeing you, I feel guilty. Like I’m choosing you over Allah. Like I’m betraying my parents even though they don’t know.” Daniel reached for her hand, holding it firmly. “Amina, listen. I know this isn’t easy for you. I know what you’re giving up just by being with me. But I swear—” his voice cracked, surprising her I’ll never take advantage of you. I just… I need you to stay. Even if all I get is to hold your hand like this.” Her chest tightened. His words melted something inside her. Tears pricked her eyes, but she turned her face away. “You don’t make it easy to stay strong.” He chuckled softly, pulling her hand to his lips. “And you don’t make it easy not to love you.” When he dropped her off, Amina lingered by the car door. The temptation to lean in, to let him kiss her, was overwhelming. But she stepped back, her voice trembling. “Goodnight, Daniel.” He didn’t protest. He just smiled faintly and whispered, “Goodnight, my Ammee As she climbed the stairs back to her room, her heart was split in two one side heavy with guilt, the other soaring with love she couldn’t deny. And deep down, she knew this wasn’t a love that could stay hidden forever.
