An hour later, Caro was sitting up in bed, reading Henry’s letter for the fifth time, when Fanny slipped into her room. “Good morning, m’lady.” Caro had opened the curtains of one window so that a shaft of light fell across her bed. Fanny began crossing the room to open the rest of them. “I didn’t think to find you up this early.” “Indeed,” Caro said, setting the letter aside. “It has been an eventful morning already.” That was when Fanny noticed the badly crumpled gown Caro had draped over a chair. She came staggering to a halt in the middle of the room and rounded on her mistress, hands on her hips. “I can see that it has.
