Caro awoke the next day upon a pillow streaked with tears. After Fanny had led her back to Lord Graverley’s landau, she had lied for the second time in her life about having come down with a megrim. Anne’s eyebrow gave a violent twitch, as she knew full well that, for Caro, a megrim was code for Henry Greville has just broken my heart, but she said nothing. Lord Graverley was everything that was solicitous and understanding, raising the hood of the landau so nobody would witness her distress and conveying her home immediately.
