A New Beginning

The night before I was to leave for university was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind filled with thoughts of the future and how I would finally be free, well to an extent. My suitcase sat by the door, packed with all the essentials I would need for my new life. I fell asleep with a smile on my face until a soft knock on my door woke me up. Before I could respond, my mom walked in, her expression serious yet gentle. She sat down on the edge of my bed, smoothing out the wrinkles in the blanket. “My daughter, I need to talk to you,” she began, her voice softer than usual. I sat up, rubbing my eyes. “What is it, Mom?” She took a deep breath, as if gathering her thoughts. “You’re going off to university tomorrow, and I want to make sure you understand a few things.” She paused, her eyes searching mine. “Life is going to be different. You’ll be on your own, and there will be many challenges.” I nodded, waiting for her to continue. “I know I haven’t always been the easiest on you,” she said, her voice cracking slightly. “But I want you to know that everything I’ve done has been for your own good. To prepare you for the world.” I could feel tears welling up in my eyes, but I blinked them away. This was the closest she had ever come to apologizing or explaining her harshness. “You’re a strong and smart girl, Thelma,” she continued. “Stronger than you realize. I understand that in time, you will meet a guy and fall in love, but that should not keep you from getting the best grades. That is the primary reason you were sent there." Her tone became harsh again. "I’m proud of you. I want you to succeed. To make the most of this opportunity.” I was stunned. My mom had always been strict, her love hidden behind layers of tough expectations and discipline. Hearing her speak like this was both surprising and touching. “Thank you, Mom,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I’ll do my best.” She nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. “I know you will. And remember, no matter what happens, you can always come to me. I may not always show it, but I love you.” The tears I had been holding back finally spilled over. I reached out and hugged her, and for the first time in a long time, she hugged me back with genuine warmth. “Get some rest,” she said, pulling away and standing up. “You have a big day tomorrow.” As she left the room, I lay back down, my heart feeling lighter than it had in years. I don't know if I will be able to have that connection with her or get a mother-daughter relationship, I held onto that feeling of the hug. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but for now, I felt ready to face them. I closed my eyes, a small smile on my lips, and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the new experiences that awaited me at the university. *The Next Day* The next morning, I was up early to finish packing. My brothers helped carry my bags to the car. My dad is driving me to the university. As we drove away, I looked back at the house, feeling a strange mix of relief and longing. This was my chance to start fresh, away from the pain and sadness. I promised myself I would make the most of it. I arrived at the university campus feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. My dad helped me carry my bags up to my new room in the dormitory. I had already imagined what my roommates would be like and hoped we would get along well. As we approached the door, I took a deep breath and smiled at my dad. “This is it,” I said as I tried to sound more confident than I felt. Dad gave me a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “You’re going to do great, dear. Call us if you need anything.” Inside, I was the third to arrive. I saw that two ladies were already there, chatting and unpacking their belongings. The room is bright and airy, with four beds neatly arranged along the walls. The first girl to greet me was a friendly, outgoing brunette with a big smile. “Hi, I’m Emily!” she says, extending her hand. “I’m studying Psychology.” I shake her hand, feeling a little more at ease. “Nice to meet you, Emily. I’m Thelma, and I’m studying Business Administration.” “I’m Sophia, and I’m in the Computer Science program. Nice to meet you, Thelma.” Just as we’re settling into our conversation, the door opens, and our fourth roommate walks in. She’s tall with curly hair and an air of confidence. “Hey everyone, I’m Megan. I’m in the Architecture program.” So, where are you all from?” I ask, trying to keep the conversation flowing. Emily is quick to answer. “I’m from the city, not too far from here. My parents thought it would be good for me to stay on campus to get the full university experience.” Sophia nods. “I’m from a small town a few hours away. I’m really excited to be here, but a little nervous too.” “I’m from out of state, so this is a big change for me. But I love new adventures.” Megan smiles. I smile, feeling a sense of belonging. “I’m from the suburbs. It’s nice to be somewhere new, but I’m definitely a bit nervous as well.” We spend the next hour talking about our backgrounds, interests, and what we’re looking forward to in university. As we finish unpacking, Emily suggests we take a walk around the campus to familiarize ourselves with the area. We all agreed that it is a great idea. The campus is bustling with activity. First-year students and their families are everywhere, moving boxes, taking photos, and saying their goodbyes. Emily, Sophia, Megan, and I stroll through the main quad, admiring the historic buildings and lush greenery. “This place is beautiful,” Sophia said and I totally agree with her. We also checked out the library, the student union, and various academic buildings too. “Hey, look!” Emily says, pointing to a flyer on a bulletin board. “There’s a welcome party tonight for all the new students. We should go!” “Sounds like fun,” I say. “It’ll be a good way to meet more people.” We spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the campus and grabbing a quick bite to eat at the campus café. By the time we return to our dorm room, we are buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the evening ahead. As we get ready for the welcome party, the room is filled with laughter and chatter. When we arrive at the party, the atmosphere is electric and different. The music is so loud, and students are mingling and introducing themselves. Emily, Sophia, Megan, and I quickly find ourselves swept up in the excitement. “Here’s to new beginnings!” Emily says, raising her cup in a toast. “To new friends!” Sophia adds, clinking her cup with the others. I smile, feeling a sense of optimism. “To new adventures,” I say, raising my cup really high.
