Consequences

Enough is enough. Ava's actions have gone too far, and it's time to put a stop to it. My heart pounds as I walk down the hallway to Professor Jameson's office. I knock on the door and wait for a response. “Come in,” Professor Jameson’s voice calls from inside. I push the door open and step in. The professor looks up from his desk, surprised to see me. “Thelma, what brings you here?” he asks, setting his papers aside. “Professor, I need to talk to you about something important,” I say, trying to keep my voice steady. “It’s about Ava and what she’s been doing.” His expression becomes serious, and he gestures for me to sit down. “Go on.” I take a deep breath and begin. “Ava has been deliberate in trying to damage my image at school. She tampered with my presentation in your office through one of her friends and tried to ruin the fashion show. I have proof of the presentation but not the fashion show.” I place the folder on his desk and open it, showing him the evidence. Professor Jameson’s eyes widen as he sees the video recordings and goes through my notes. “This is serious, Thelma,” he says, his voice filled with concern. “Why didn’t you come to me sooner?” “I wasn’t sure if anyone would believe me especially since I had no evidence initially,” I admit. “But I can’t let her get away with this anymore.” He nods, leaning back in his chair. “You did the right thing by coming forward. This kind of behavior is unacceptable, and it needs to be addressed. I’ll take this to the student disciplinary council. They will review the evidence and decide on the appropriate action.” “Thank you, Professor.” I said as I stood up to leave. He gives me a reassuring smile. “You’re a strong and brilliant student, Thelma. Don’t let anyone undermine your hard work. I’ll make sure this is handled properly. The council will notify you of the date for the formal hearing.” **** The Hearing***** The tension in the room is thick as I sit down, waiting for the hearing to begin. The disciplinary committee has gathered in a large, intimidating room with high ceilings and dark wood paneling. Professor Jameson, as the head of the committee, looks stern and focused. I glance around nervously, spotting Ava on the other side of the room. She looks calm, but I know she’s just putting on a front. Sarah sits next to her, looking scared and fidgeting with her hands. “Let’s begin,” Professor Jameson announces, his voice echoing in the quiet room. ““We are here today to address allegations of misconduct involving Ms. Ava Thompson. The evidence has been presented, and we will hear testimony from those involved. First, we will hear from Thelma.” I take a deep breath as I stand up to give my testimony. “During a major presentation given to us by you sir, I discovered that someone had tampered with my materials after I submitted them. My friend Meghan happened to pass by your office and saw Sarah messing around with the presentation and called my attention to it. I arrived and saw important sections of my research notes were missing, and misleading data was inserted into my charts. This sabotage would have caused me to fail the assignment if I didn't catch Sarah.” Professor Jameson nods. “And you believe Ava is responsible for this?” “Yes, sir. I have reason to believe she orchestrated the sabotage.” Professor Jameson nods again, taking notes. “Thank you, Thelma. Ava, you are accused of tampering with Thelma’s presentation and sabotaging the fashion show. How do you respond?” Ava stands up, her face a mask of confidence. “I deny all the accusations. I had nothing to do with any of it.” Dr Lewis, one of the committee members then turn to Sarah. “You were mentioned in the evidence Sarah. Can you shed some light on this matter? What happened?” Sarah shifts uncomfortably in her seat. “I... I have to confess. I did tamper with Thelma’s presentation. But I did it because Ava pressured me into it. She also planned the sabotage of the fashion show. She had me distract the organizers during the fashion show, so she could do what she did.” Ava’s confident facade cracks. “That’s not true!” she exclaims. “She’s lying!” Dr. Lewis raises a hand to silence Ava. “Sarah, do you have any proof of Ava’s involvement?” Sarah nods and takes out her phone. “I recorded our conversations. I was scared of what she might do if I didn’t do what she asks, so I kept the recordings as insurance.” The room falls silent as she plays the recording. Ava’s voice is unmistakable, detailing the plan to sabotage my presentation and the fashion show. There’s a collective gasp from the committee and all of us in the audience. Ava’s confident demeanor crumbles. “This isn’t fair!” she shouts. “You can’t use that against me!” Professor Jameson silences her with a stern look. “Enough, Ava. The evidence is clear. You are guilty of sabotage.” Dr. Lewis turns to Ava. “Ava, the evidence against you is overwhelming. Do you have anything to say in your defense?” Ava slumps in her seat, her bravado gone. “I’m sorry,” she whispers. “I didn’t think it would go this far.” Dr. Lewis nods gravely. “Ava, your actions will have serious consequences.” You can almost see the tension in the room if possible as the committee deliberates. And after what feels like an eternity, Professor Jameson delivers the verdict. “Ava, you will lose your privileges to participate in any extracurricular activities for the remainder of the academic year. Additionally, you are barred from holding any student council positions. You will also apologize to Thelma in front of your peers in the lecture room.” Ava’s face is a mix of anger and humiliation. She turns to me, her eyes filled with reluctant remorse. “I’m sorry, Thelma,” she mutters. “I shouldn’t have done those things. It was wrong.” I feel a mix of relief and sadness. It’s over, but it’s also a harsh reminder to me of the lengths people will go to ruin a person. ********************* Back in the hostel, I slump onto my bed, the weight of the day lifting slightly as my friends and roommates Emily, Meghan, and Sophia gather around me. Their eyes are wide with curiosity and concern. “What happened at the hearing?” Emily asks. I take a deep breath and begin to recount the events. “Ava denied everything at first, but then Sarah confessed and played the recordings she had of Ava’s plans.” “No way!” Meghan exclaims. “So Ava got caught?” “Yeah, she did,” I reply, nodding. “She lost her privileges and can’t hold any student council positions anymore. She even had to apologize to me in front of the whole class.” Sophia looks thoughtful. “That must have been so hard for her. Do you think she’s really sorry?” “I don’t know. She looked humbled, but only time will tell if she’s truly remorseful.” I replied. “I’m just glad you stood up for yourself. You did the right thing, Thelma.” Emily said while giving me a hug.
