Realizing she wasn't joking, I was so terrified I rolled right off the sofa. I scrambled to grab my phone from the floor, struggling to get to my feet.
“Someone's calling me, I have to go down. You get some rest.”
I heard the Director complain from behind,“You useless thing! Don't let me see you again.”
Back in my room, my heart was still pounding from the adrenaline spike. Thank god I got out of there; how would I ever face her again?
The next morning, before I was even fully awake, I received a call from the Director.“Brian, we need to head back early today. I have a new employee orientation at nine. Get up!”
I checked the time; it was just past six. Too early, not time to leave yet. I dozed in bed for a bit longer before hurriedly getting up—I didn't want to keep her waiting again.
By the time I drove the car up from the underground garage, she was already waiting at the hotel entrance. She got in and handed me a bag from the back seat—breakfast she had packed at the hotel.“Here, eat this. Sorry for waking you up so early.”
Hearing her speak so naturally, it was as if last night hadn't happened at all. Since she didn't bring it up, naturally I couldn't ask. I just pretended nothing had happened.
Once we hit the highway, I checked the rearview mirror. She was leaning back in her seat, asleep. I thought to myself, thank god I didn't make a move last night, or imagine how awkward the atmosphere in the car would be today. Seeing her sleeping so soundly, I took the opportunity to turn up the AC a little. Small gestures like that are part of a driver's duty.
We were back at the office a little past eight. She picked up her bag and walked briskly into the building. I parked the car and walked into the transport office.
Peter, our fleet manager, came over and slapped me on the shoulder with a grin.“How was last night? Look at you, you're walking on air.”
I looked at him and smiled.“What are you talking about? Is our Director really that kind of person? Don't belittle your boss like that. Watch out, or I'll tell her and she'll fire you tomorrow.”
I stuffed the two packs of Davidoff the Director gave me into his hands. He looked at them, smiled, and said,“You've got a conscience, at least. Fine, you were busy on the business trip all day yesterday, so I won't assign you a car today. Rest during the day.”
I said to Peter,“Rest where? My landlord sublet the place I'm renting now. I don't even have a place to sleep.”
“Cherish the free time you have now.” Peter leaned in and whispered,“I'll tell you something. Our administrative manager has changed again. I heard the Director poached this one from another company with a high salary. I hear she not only handles administration but also HR, so we'd better keep a low profile.”
“Why the manager change again? Manager Walker was perfectly nice. So amiable, not the slightest bit arrogant.”
Peter sighed.“I heard Manager Walker is getting older and is close to retirement. This new one is a woman, poached from a Fortune 500 company. She definitely knows her stuff when it comes to management.”
No wonder the Director was in such a hurry to return today. The “new employee” she mentioned couldn't be this woman, could it? Whether she's a man or a woman, I just want to do my job well. I don't want to get promoted or get rich, but I hope she doesn't put obstacles in my way everywhere.
But I need to find a place to live urgently, otherwise where am I going to sleep tonight?
I walked out of the company and hurriedly hailed a taxi. Just as I was about to get in, someone tapped me on the shoulder.
I turned around and saw Ethan. Ethan and I joined the company at the same time, we trained together, and even shared a dorm. Later, he resigned and went to a company across the street, so we still met often and had a pretty good private relationship.
He had a burly build; I think he was a part-time fitness instructor too. He used his advantage—you could say he had seen countless women—so whenever we met, we always had plenty to talk about.
I took out the free Davidoff and handed him a pack, and we stood there chatting.
He was basically showing off about a new beauty he'd met recently. He lit a cigarette and said,“Brian, with your physique and build, it's a waste not being a fitness instructor.”
I laughed.“My physique? I get winded just from a little jog.”
“Hey, you think a fitness instructor needs to know kung fu? I'm telling you, with your looks and build, just standing there is like a business card. You think those women come to the gym really to exercise? You know what I mean.” He patted my stomach, and we both laughed.
I noticed the sky was darkening; it looked like it was going to rain. I had been so engrossed in chatting with Ethan that I forgot about finding a place to stay.
I said goodbye to Ethan and turned to get into the taxi, but looking back, a woman had already gotten into my car.
I hurried forward a few steps, walked over, and said,“Hey, what's the matter with you? Don't you understand first come, first served? I saw this car first. How could you just get in?”
She looked up and sized me up. I also took the opportunity to examine her carefully. She was about thirty years old, with delicate features, a high nose bridge, lips that were neither too thin nor too thick, and a perfectly shaped face. Just looking at her was a pleasure. As for her figure... well, a woman with such a beautiful face certainly wouldn't have a bad figure. She was wearing business attire, looking noble and elegant.
Seeing me staring at her for so long, she said impatiently,“What are you looking at? Never seen a beautiful woman before? Take your hand away, I'm leaving.”
Only then did I remember—it was I who saw the car first! How could she just get in and leave?“Hey, big sis, you can't do this. I saw this car first, okay?”
She rolled her eyes at me.“Who are you calling big sis? Look at that shoehorn face of yours, and you still have the nerve to call me big sis.”
Damn, is something wrong with this woman's eyes? Shoehorn face? I'm the face of our company!
I quickly corrected myself,“Beauty, beauty, is that better? I tell you, I saw this car just now. I just turned around to say a word, and you got up. Do you think that's appropriate? You're so beautiful, how can you be so unreasonable?”
“Who's unreasonable? Just because you saw it, it's yours? There are so many cars on the street, you see them all, why don't you claim they're all yours? Honestly.”
I didn't expect this woman to be so sharp-tongued; she refuted me instantly, and I couldn't find a comeback for a moment.
“Fine, I won't argue with you. I'm in a hurry to find a place to stay. Give me the car.”
“Tch, just because you say so, I should give it to you? With your attitude just now, I definitely won't give it to you.” She turned her head to the driver,“Let's go.”
I shouted at her from behind,“You get back here, you psycho!”
She poked her head out of the car window,“You're the psycho. Your whole family is crazy.”
