Olivia stood beside Jim, feeling a rush of relief as Daniel and Quinn left the scene. “You have no right to talk to me like that, Daniel!” she called out. “I’ve moved on, and it’s time you do the same!” “Whatever,” Daniel shot back, not bothering to look over his shoulder. Quinn followed him, her face twisted in annoyance. Once they were gone, the tension in the room faded. Guests resumed their conversations, ignoring the drama that just took place right in front of them. Olivia couldn’t help but smile. This was her night, and she wanted to enjoy it. “Great job, Olivia!” a guest said, walking past her. “This event is incredible!” “Thank you!” she replied with happiness. “I’m glad everyone is enjoying it.” As the night went on, Olivia felt the weight lift from her shoulders. She mingled among the guests, engaging them with her charm. “Can I get you something to drink?” she asked a pair of guests. “Wine, please!” one of them said, and Olivia got a server immediately. When she returned, she spotted Jim across the room, watching her with a proud smile. She walked over to him, feeling energized. “Can you believe how well this is going?” she asked excitedly. “Absolutely! You’re a natural at this,” Jim said with his usual smile. “And it’s nice to see you so happy.” “I just feel amazed,” Olivia admitted, a lightness in her heart. “Thank you for your letting me do it” “I had more to gain so thank you instead” Jim replied, squeezing her shoulder gently. As the night continued, Olivia began to relax even more. The music played softly in the background as she mixed around Suddenly, she turned a corner and found herself face-to-face with Quinn again. She had forgotten to ask Jim if she could ask them to leave. Olivia’s stomach sank. “What do you want?” she asked, her voice tight. Quinn smirked, eyes gleaming with mischief. “Well, well, look who decided to crash the party. Did you sneak in? Also, that man you seduced isn't here. Say the truth.” Olivia felt her anger flare. “I’m hosting this event, Quinn. You know that.” “Really? Because it looks like you don’t belong here,” Quinn shot back. “I’m surprised they let you in after everything.” Just then, Daniel appeared, his expression equal parts shock and annoyance. “What are you doing here? Tell me the truth now and stop lying!” he asked, his voice low and intense. “What do you mean? I’m hosting!” Olivia said, trying to keep calm. “Stop trying to act like you’re someone important,” Daniel scoffed. “You must have snuck in like Quinn said. It’s embarrassing.” “That’s enough!” Olivia raised her voice, feeling tears of anger in her eyes. “You have no right to speak to me like that!” “Just move on, Olivia,” Daniel shouted, his voice rising. “I’ve moved on, and you should too!” Everyone glared at Quinn and Daniel as they had drawn attention to themselves again which was quite embarrassing. “I’m done with you, Daniel!” she yelled. “You don’t get to control my life anymore!” Jim stepped closer, wrapping his arm around her. “You need to respect her,” he said calmly but firmly to Daniel. “Olivia is my wife now.” “You can’t be serious. I don't care about what she told you but I don't think you deserve to be shackled with this slut” Daniel yelled as he glared at Olivia with pure hatred in his eyes. “I am serious, and it’s time you understand that,” Jim said, standing protectively beside Olivia. “You’ve lost the right to tell her what to do.” Quinn’s eyes widened in shock as she looked between the two men. “What do you mean, ‘your wife’? You were serious about that” she asked, clearly trying to process the situation. “Olivia and I are building a life together,” Jim explained. “You should stay out of it. Also, are you heard of hearing by any chance? Why do you behave like annoying bugs? I clearly let you go the first time.” Daniel took a step back, trying to regain his composure. “You’re just playing games, Olivia. You’re trying to make me jealous.” “No, I’m moving on,” Olivia replied, her voice solid. “I’m done with you and your lies.” Daniel's face twisted in frustration. “You think you can just do this? You’re my ex-wife!” “Exactly!” Olivia said, feeling annoyed at how he kept embarrassing her. “You had your chance, and you blew it.” Jim nodded, looking at Daniel. “Leave. Your presence is no longer required and you have ruined the mood for the evening. It's quite annoying that you can be such a pest. I wonder how Olivia ever put up with such irritable behavior” The crowd continued to watch, eyes widening with interest. Olivia felt the tension shift as Daniel glanced around at the onlookers. His bravado slipped. “You'll regret talking to me in such a manner!,” Daniel said, finally backing down. “This isn’t over, Olivia.” He turned and left, with Quinn following behind, looking flustered. As they disappeared into the crowd, Olivia’s heart raced, adrenaline still pumping. She looked up at Jim, feeling grateful. “Thank you for defending me. I didn’t think I could handle that.” “Of course,” Jim said warmly. “You deserve to be treated with respect. You did great out there.” She felt a weight lift from her shoulders. “I knew I needed to stand up for myself, but I didn’t expect it to feel this good.” “Good,” Jim replied, a smile on his face. “Now let’s enjoy the rest of the night.” Everyone went about their business and pretty soon, the evening was done with. Once the party wrapped up and the last guests left, Olivia turned to Jim. “Can we talk? I still need answers.” “Of course,” he replied, sensing her seriousness. “Why did you act like you didn’t know me the first time they confronted me? ” she pressed, searching his face for the truth. Jim took a deep breath. “Initially, I didn’t know you. When you offered to be my surrogate, I had to make sure it was a safe choice,” he admitted. Olivia's brow furrowed. “So you did a background check on me?” “Yes,” he confirmed, looking apologetic. “I needed to ensure that everything was right, especially because of your connection to Daniel.” Olivia frowned but felt a sense of understanding. “I just wanted to make Daniel pay for what he did to me. I don’t care about his connection with me.” “Good. As long as you play your part, I promise not to ever bring in another woman and help with whatever you need.” “Well, you better keep good on your promise hun cause I keep my word.” **** The day after the ball, Jim's grandmother called. “Jim, I want you to come over for dinner tonight. And bring Olivia with you,” she commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument. “Sure, Grandma. Is everything okay?” Jim asked, sensing her serious tone. “It will be once I meet this wife of yours at once,” she replied. “Make sure she’s dressed nicely.” When Jim hung up, he turned to Olivia. “Looks like we’re having dinner with my grandmother tonight.” Olivia felt a wave of nerves wash over her. “Do I have to go? She is the matriarch of the family and The Diane Morrison. I mean, your grandmother is… well, intimidating.” “We need to go. She's excited to meet you, and it’s important to her. Plus, you’re my wife. She has no idea of the contract and I gave her my reasons for a quiet wedding” Jim said with a reassuring smile. Olivia sighed, “Fine. But I want to look good.” “Great! Let’s go shopping then. We’ll get you something nice,” Jim replied, his enthusiasm infectious. After a few hours of shopping, Olivia picked out a flattering dress, hoping it would impress Jim’s grandmother. She also got her hair styled and her nails done, wanting to feel presentable“This better work,” she thought to herself as she looked in the mirror. Later that evening, they got ready to leave. Jim looked dapper in his suit, and Olivia felt nervous but excited in her new dress. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” she asked, fidgeting with her hair. “Trust me, Olivia. My family will love you,” Jim reassured her, holding her hand gently. Still, doubt crept into her mind as they drove. The house looked grand as they arrived, and her heart raced. “We’re here,” Jim said as they parked. “Yeah, I can see that,” Olivia replied, feeling her stomach twist. “Just remember to smile. It’ll be fine,” Jim encouraged, giving her a supportive nod. Taking a deep breath, Olivia stepped out of the car. She felt anxiety coursing through her. “Okay, here goes nothing,” she whispered. They walked to the door together, and Jim rang the bell. Almost immediately, the door swung open to reveal his grandmother, Diane. Her sharp gaze scanned Olivia from head to toe. “Jim, there you are! What took you so long?” Diane said, her voice full of authority. Then she turned to Olivia, eyes filled with disapproval. “And you must be Olivia. I hope you know how to behave at my table.” “Uh, yes, ma’am,” Olivia replied, trying to sound confident, but her voice trembled slightly. Diane stepped back, allowing them to enter. “You’re lucky I prepared a nice dinner. Come in, both of you. I want to see how you two are living.”
