Chapter V: The Rebellion Begins The old dry dock was a graveyard of rusted ship hulls and rotted timber, stretching out into the dark, murky waters of the eastern river. The rain had slowed to a miserable, freezing drizzle, shrouding the area in a thick, gray fog. Luna stood in the shadow of a colossal, decaying freighter, his jacket pulled tight against the chill. He was hyper-aware of every sound, the lapping of the water, the creaking of the metal, the distant wail of a siren in the upper city. His senses were sharpening at an alarming rate; he could hear the heartbeat of a rat scurrying fifty yards away. A shadow materialized out of the fog, moving with a fluid, terrifying grace that no human could ever mimic. Xavier, Luna breathed, stepping forward. The vampire Alpha didn't hesitate. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, catching Luna by the waist and pulling him into a fierce, protective embrace. Xavier buried his face in Luna’s neck, inhaling deeply, his cold hands sliding under Luna’s jacket to find the searing heat of his skin. You're shaking, Xavier murmured, his voice laced with an intense, protective anxiety. He pulled back just enough to look into Luna’s golden eyes. Did someone hurt you? Did your pack suspect something? Garrick smelled the change, Luna said, his voice tight. I lied to him, told him it was vampire magic. But he won't believe it for long. Xavier, they’re planning a total purge. Next week, during the day. They're using the human police to flush your people out, and then my squad is supposed to execute everyone. Xavier’s eyes flashed a lethal crimson, his jaw clenching so hard the bone looked ready to crack. They want a war of attrition. My Council wants the same. They’ve given me two weeks to dismantle your pack, or they’re unleashing a scorched-earth strike. We can't let them fight, Luna said, his hands gripping Xavier's wrists, his eyes desperate. If they fight, the city will burn, and we’ll be caught in the middle. Our child our child won't survive a war, Xavier. Xavier placed his hand flat against Luna's stomach again, feeling that rapid, magical little heartbeat. The contrast between his own icy flesh and the furnace-like heat of Luna’s pregnant body was stark, a physical manifestation of the impossible bridge they had built between life and death. Then we don't give them a war, Xavier said, a dark, calculating smile spreading across his pale lips. We give them a revolution. Luna blinked, looking confused. What do you mean? The Alphas of both our kinds rule through the old ways, through fear, blood-purity, and the segregation of our societies, Xavier explained, his voice taking on the sharp, commanding tone of a visionary. Your pack thinks they are superior because they can pass as human and accumulate wealth. My council thinks they are superior because they are immortal. But both sides are rotting from the inside out. Xavier stepped closer, his grip on Luna tightening. We don't run away, Luna. We stay, and we overthrow them. We unite the factions that are tired of the endless bleeding. There are vampires who want to live without the fear of the sun, who want to find a sustainable way to survive without hunting civilians. And there are wolves, Betas and Omegas, who are sick of being used as breeding stock and frontline meat for Alphas who don't care about their lives. Luna’s breath hitched as the sheer scope of Xavier’s plan began to dawn on him. You're talking about a coup. On both sides. Simultaneously. I am talking about a rebellion, Xavier corrected, his voice a low, thrilling purr. A new order. A society where a hybrid child isn't an abomination, but the crown prince of a united city. Luna looked at Xavier, seeing the absolute conviction in the vampire's ancient eyes. The fear that had been choking him since he discovered the pregnancy suddenly evaporated, replaced by a fierce, wild heat that rushed through his veins. He was an Omega soldier, yes, but he was also a father now. He had something worth killing for, something worth reshaping the world for. How do we start? Luna asked, a dangerous, beautiful smile finally breaking through his anxiety. We start by taking out the hounds, Xavier said. Garrick first.
