CHAPTER SIX 'Ainsley, it's Eva here. May I speak to Charlie, please?' 'I'll just see if he's available,' Ainsley said, her tone cool and measured. She always let Eva know, in a multitude of subtle ways, that she had no special privileges over and above all the other people clamoring for a piece of Charlie's attention. 'Hullo, darling.’ He was alive, it was really him. She opened her mouth. Nothing came out. 'Eva?' She swallowed the lump in her throat. ‘About tonight. I'm not up to cooking so I wondered if you'd mind if we went out for dinner instead.' 'Not at all.' She thought she detected a note of relief.
