Episode 5

The mansion was silent when Tasha arrived that evening. Most of the staff had gone home, leaving only a skeleton crew to help with final preparations. The chandeliers reflected the warm light across polished floors, and the faint scent of roses from earlier lingered in the air. Tasha adjusted her clipboard, her pulse quickening as she saw Leo already reviewing the lighting plan near the grand staircase. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing strong forearms. The city lights gleamed in the windows behind him, highlighting the sharp angles of his face. She felt a familiar heat crawl up her neck. “Late night again,” Leo said without looking at her. “Someone has to make sure nothing is overlooked,” she replied, trying to sound professional. He turned to face her, eyes dark and intense. “You always do more than necessary. You always have.” Tasha swallowed hard. She could feel the pull between them, the old attraction she had tried to bury. Every glance from him was a reminder of what they had lost, what they had wanted but never had. She reminded herself of her purpose. She was here to plan an engagement, not to get lost in past flames. --- They moved through the grand hall together, arranging tables and discussing centerpieces. Every time their hands touched while adjusting plans, Tasha felt an electric jolt. Her heart raced, and she knew he felt it too. “You are impossible,” Leo said quietly as their hands brushed for the third time that evening. “And you are arrogant,” she replied, keeping her voice calm despite the tension. He smiled faintly. “I remember when you used to argue like this. It was impossible to resist you.” Tasha’s stomach tightened. She wanted to step back, to push him away, but every instinct screamed toward him. The room seemed smaller, the air heavier. “You should focus,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “We cannot afford mistakes.” He leaned closer, close enough that she could feel his breath. “I am focused,” he said softly. “On the party, of course.” She nodded, heart racing. She was trying to keep her distance, but the pull was unbearable. --- Later, they moved to the terrace to inspect the lighting for the evening event. The fountains glistened under the soft glow of lanterns. Tasha’s heels clicked against the stone floor as she walked, careful not to look at him too long. “You are quieter tonight,” Leo said, walking beside her. “I have a lot on my mind,” she replied. He glanced at her, his gaze searching. “Thinking about more than the party?” She froze, her pulse quickening. She could not tell him the truth yet. She shook her head. “Just the party,” she said, her voice firmer than she felt. He stopped walking and turned toward her. The air between them was charged, heavy with unspoken words and memories. “You always hide more than you show,” he said softly. “I used to know you better than anyone. I thought I still did.” Tasha’s chest tightened. She wanted to reach for him, to explain everything, but she could not. Not yet. She had to be careful. --- The night grew darker, and they returned inside. The final details were taking longer than expected, and the tension between them did not fade. Every glance, every accidental brush of hands, every close proximity reminded them of what they had lost and what they still wanted. “You have changed,” Leo said quietly, looking at her. “I have had to,” she replied. She wanted to say more, to tell him about the child, about Lily, about everything, but she kept her voice steady. “Life demands it.” He studied her for a long moment, and she could see the conflict in his eyes. Desire, anger, confusion. He wanted answers, and she could not give them yet. --- Suddenly, Lily appeared, slipping into the mansion quietly. Tasha stiffened at the sight of her. The woman’s presence was always a threat, a reminder of the lies that had ruined everything. “You are working late,” Lily said, her voice smooth and cold. “Do you ever stop? Or are you always trying to impress him?” “I am focused on my work,” Tasha replied, her voice firm despite the tension. Lily smirked. “Be careful. Secrets have a way of coming out. And when they do, they can destroy everything.” Tasha’s hands clenched the clipboard tightly. She could feel the danger surrounding her, the manipulations that Lily had been orchestrating for years. She had to be careful. She could not let Leo find out the truth too soon. Lily left as quietly as she had arrived, leaving Tasha and Leo alone again. --- Hours passed. They were the last two in the mansion, working on finishing touches. Tasha could feel the tension building, impossible to ignore. Every time Leo leaned closer to point something out, the air between them grew heavier. “Do you ever wonder why we ended?” Leo asked suddenly, his voice low and quiet. Tasha froze. The question was dangerous, loaded with the past. “We made mistakes,” she said carefully. “We were young, and circumstances were… complicated.” He shook his head slightly, frustration in his eyes. “It was more than that. I thought I understood what happened. But maybe I never really did.” She looked down, heart racing. She wanted to tell him the truth about the child, about Lily’s lies, about everything she had suffered. But she could not. Not yet. Instead, she said, “We cannot change the past. We can only make sure the present works.” He studied her, then nodded. “I suppose you are right.” --- Later, they moved to the grand library to review final details. The room was quiet except for the sound of their voices and the faint ticking of a clock. The tension was nearly unbearable. “You are careful,” Leo said softly. “Always careful. I remember that about you.” Tasha felt her stomach tighten. “I have to be,” she replied. “You hide so much,” he said, leaning closer. “Even now, I can tell there is more.” She swallowed hard. The pull between them was dangerous, consuming. Every glance, every brush of hands, every shared moment reminded them of what they had lost and what they still wanted. “I cannot tell you everything yet,” she said quietly. “It is too complicated.” He nodded, understanding, but his eyes betrayed his desire for answers. --- By midnight, Tasha was exhausted. She packed her notes and prepared to leave. Leo stopped her at the door, his hand brushing against hers. The contact was fleeting, but enough to make her heart race. “Tomorrow will be intense,” he said, his voice low. “Be ready.” Tasha nodded, trying to maintain composure. “I will be.” She left the mansion, heart pounding, mind racing. Every warning, every threat, every secret pressed in on her. She knew the tension between her and Leo would not fade. It would only grow, becoming harder to control. --- Back at her apartment, she found a small envelope slipped under her door. She opened it and froze. Inside was a single photograph of a baby with a handwritten note: *“He will never know unless you decide to tell him.”* Tasha’s hands shook. Her worst fear had arrived. The child she had kept hidden for years, the secret that had protected her and the child from Lily’s manipulations, was now in her face. She knew immediately that the choices she made next would change everything. Every secret, every desire, every risk had led to this moment. The fire between her and Leo, the threats from Lily, and the knowledge of the child all collided into a dangerous mix. She could no longer pretend that the past did not exist. ----- Tasha placed the photo on her desk and stared at it, realizing she had to make a decision. Do she reveal the truth to Leo now, or continue protecting him from Lily’s lies? The moment she made that choice, she knew nothing would ever be the same.
