Steph watched the trail riders head out. Two horses without riders were led by the others. Longingly, she stared after them, but the scenery had shifted already, and she was walking. Fields and hills stretched before her, dry and dusty, and she knew she’d been walking for hours when suddenly animals popped up all around her. Kangaroos? Dimly remembering they could be quite dangerous, Steph looked for cover but there wasn’t any. It didn’t matter anyway, because a flood wave rolled in, washing away the kangaroos, which were bobbing up and down in the water, then reaching her, pulling her under. She’d barely clawed her way back to the surface when the phone rang.
“Haas,” she croaked out, blinking herself awake when she saw Natalie’s face on the display.
