46 “Rachel, would you help me out of bed and into the armchair? I’m sick of being in bed.” Rachel looked up from the magazine she was reading. “Sure.” Esther moved with the slow movements of someone decades older. Rachel grasped her hand and offered a supporting arm. “Ouch,” Esther said. “I can feel that fall already. I’ll be black and blue tomorrow. Sorry to be so helpless, but my feet are cold. My slippers are in the bottom of the cupboard.” Rachel went around to fetch them. How humiliating this must be for Esther. A few months ago, she’d been cycling to work.
