While I took a sip from the glass of champagne, my eyes scanned the hall for my manager. Once he notes my presence, I would be out of here.
The game I've been waiting for was launching tonight and God forbid I miss it because of this dinner party.
Unluckily for me, before I could bump into my manager, I bumped into Axel instead.
“You came,” he said, but there was no hint of surprise on his face.
“I did. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go find my manager.”
I tried to bypass him, but he quickly blocked my path.
“You know that I am the one who requested you be here tonight, right?”
“Why exactly?”
He raised his hand in a bid to touch me but I immediately moved away from him.
“Don't be so stubborn, Lilian. I am here offering you a hand of reconciliation. Have you forgotten all we had? The times we shared?”
My hand tightened around the glass and it took everything in me to not hurl the drink on his face.
I asked him those same questions years ago when I found out that he already walked down the aisle and married another woman.
His response?
‘I have to secure my future’
“I have.”
The corners of his lips twitched. “I would believe that if I didn't know you as much as I do, Lilian. Let go of your ego, and let us have what we once did.”
What exactly did he take me for?
A spinless woman? A woman so overcome by her love that he can toss me aside whenever he wants then come back and I'll be there waiting for him?
“Mr Grey! There you are,” my manager sprang out of nowhere and my night somehow became worse.
“I have searched for you all over, have you been enjoying the party?”
I felt a hand slide across my waist and pulled me close. It was Axel and he continued to speak as though he was not touching me.
“I've been looking for you as well. We have decided to give the deal a chance, but Miss Stanford here has to handle everything.”
“Are you sure about that, sir? We have many capable and qualified individuals who can…”
“If she's not in, I am not as well.”
He immediately blanched, his face turning a light shade of red then he forced a smile.
“Of course, sir! I'll send her over tomorrow so the details can be discussed”
“Do that.”
“I will. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”
The moment he left, I immediately freed myself from Axel's hold and my eyes shot daggers at him.
“Never touch me in your life again!”
He had the right to look offended at my words.
“i just offered your company the deal of a lifetime and I made you the person in charge. You should be on your knees thanking me.”
“I don't remember asking you for it. You can give it to another person for all I bloody care.”
I was done with this party and stuck-up bastards who think everyone else is beneath them.
“All this because I asked you to be my mistress? I'm not going to treat you any…”
“That is where you are wrong, Axel. I cannot be offended by stuff like that because I do not care about you. You act like I spent the past years moping over you, but newsflash, I did not. I moved on with my life.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes! And matter of fact, my boyfriend is in this room with us.”
His lips twitched in that mocking manner and he c****d his head to the side.
“Is that so?”
“Yes”
“Then how come he left you all alone, cara mia. You've been by yourself this entire time. Where is this replacement of mine?”
Regret was bitter on my tongue. Why the heck did I even say that?
“Cat caught your tongue?”
“No. He's just been busy with clients, and right now he's…” I scanned the room, looking for someone easy enough.
I didn't have to search for long before I pointed to the man who looked to be the most casually dressed.
“Him. The one wearing a white shirt and brown cardigan.”
His eyes followed my finger and his brows shot up.
“You're dating Maxwell Windsor? The younger brother to your company's CEO?”
My heart dropped to my stomach. What the hell have I actually done?
I should probably put an end to my antics now, but my pride, my ego, refused to take such a hit so I nodded.
He turned back to him and he was full on smirking
“Prove it, Lilian.”
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me. Prove it, go up there and kiss him, then I'll believe you.”
“I don't have to prove anything to you.”
His brows inched towards his hairline even more and I clenched my fists.
The urge to just prove him wrong, to prove that I was in fact doing better than he assumed was overwhelming and without thinking of my actions properly, I was already marching ahead.
My steps faltered and I was about to take off running when I finally bridged the gap between me and Maxwell. He was breathtaking up close and it made my courage wither a bit.
“Is everything okay?” Even his voice was sexy.
Shutting my eyes tightly, I took a deep breath, then I opened it.
“I am so sorry about this,” I muttered and without thinking again, I grabbed his face and pressed my lips against his.
