I zipped up my old tracksuit and slowly stood up, ready to leave.
Then, from the corner of my eye, I caught a familiar flash of light.
I stopped. My gaze locked onto Flora's collarbone.
A pink diamond necklace.
The design of the chain was extremely rare, shaped like twisting vines wrapped around each other.
It was the necklace I had accidentally left in the temporary lounge outside my office last week.
Flora noticed where I was looking. Instead of hiding it, she deliberately lifted her chin and ran her fingers over the sparkling pink diamond.
"What? Never seen something like this before?" She announced loudly.
"Eric took this from the female CEO's private safe and gave it to me."
She looked at me provocatively. "Eric said that old woman was practically blind. She has so many expensive things she can't even keep track of them."
I clenched my palm so hard my nails almost dug into my skin. That necklace was the last keepsake my grandmother left me before she passed away. I had worn it close to me for years.
I never expected Eric wasn't just someone who stole company scraps. He was a habitual thief.
He must have taken advantage of his late-night security rounds, stolen the spare access card from the cleaning supervisor, and sneaked into the temporary lounge outside my office.
He didn't just steal my necklace. He even had the nerve to come here and brag that it came from the "CEO's private safe."
"Eric," I turned around and stared at him coldly, "you actually stole something like this?"
His expression changed. But he quickly forced himself to stay calm.
"Bullshit. What do you mean, stole?"
He walked over and stood in front of Flora.
"The CEO gave it to me! I gave it to the woman I love. Who are you to accuse me?"
Just then, Eric's phone on the table suddenly started vibrating.
The screen lit up.
The entire room instantly went silent.
Eric deliberately raised a finger to his lips. "Shh. Quiet. The CEO is checking on me."
He cleared his throat and immediately changed into the sweetest, most flattering expression.
Then he swiped the screen and turned on speakerphone.
"Hey, sweetheart!" His voice was so fake and overly sweet it made everyone uncomfortable.
A rough, overly dramatic older woman's voice came from the phone.
"Baby, why aren't you back yet?"
The woman spoke in a deliberately childish tone, her strong rural accent impossible to miss.
"Come back to the company and spend time with me. I've missed you so much."
I stood there and almost laughed. That was clearly Eric's own mother, the same woman who raised pigs back in their village.
She had tried to change her voice, but Eric and I had been together for years. There was no way I wouldn't recognize her accent.
Unfortunately, everyone else in the room fell for the act. The classmates all gasped.
Some immediately raised their glasses toward Eric, giving him thumbs up.
"She really is obsessed with him. Eric actually managed to win over a trillion-dollar female CEO."
Eric continued speaking sweetly into the phone. "Okay, baby. I'll be back soon. Wait for me, alright?"
After hanging up, he walked straight toward me. He pointed toward the door and spoke in a vicious tone.
"Chloe, did you hear that? The CEO can't even go a second without me. If you dare show up at the company tomorrow and cause trouble, I'll have security drag you out."
He pointed at my face arrogantly. "Get out, right now!"
I ignored his threats.
Instead, I looked past his shoulder and stared deeply at the necklace around Flora's neck.
"No need to wait until tomorrow."
I pulled out my chair and sat back down. My expression turned cold.
"What belongs to me... I'm taking it back right now."
