A Thin Line Between Love and War Olivia's POV "Do you honestly believe I will just forgive you?" The words came out of my mouth like a slap, rougher than I had meant, but right now I couldn turn back. Adam stood rigid across from me in my office with his arms folded. The tempest building in his blue eyes reflected the one raging within me. "I'm not asking Olivia for a pardon," said. His voice was low, methodical, but it also carried a tenderness that sliced through my rage. "I'm seeking a possibility." I laughed, turned away to pace the room. "A possibility to carry out what, Adam? To run over me once more? To run every element of my life as you did before? "That's not fair," he bit, approaching. "You're hanging to the past while I'm standing here trying to show I've changed." My chest heaving, I whirled to meet him. " altered? Demanding privileges you never earned, you bargained into Sophia's life and mine. You now want me to believe you are a new man? He stepped forward, his voice gentle but forceful. "I'm here Olivia, because I adore her. For you love is what drives. That has not changed regardless of your loathing of me for it. His comments resonated with me, and for a time my will wavered. But then I considered Ella's warnings, the pressure building from all directions, and I sharted myself. "This isn't about love, Adam," I murmured, my voice faltering despite my best attempt to appear robust. "It is about confidence. And you wrecked that the minute you let your family control our existence. He ran a hand through his hair and breathed sharply. "You believe I have no regrets about that? That I wake every day wishing I had fought more for us? "Regret doesn't change what happened," I said, my voice getting higher. "It does not undo the years I spent alone raising Sophia without you." Adam's eyes clouded, his jaw tightened. You denied me the opportunity to be at her side. You decided that for us both. "I decided to keep her safe!" I shot back, my voice shaking with rage. "To guard her against the life you promised but never brought about. From individuals like Ella, who regard her as little more than a pawn. His eyes blazed with rage, yet there was also suffering there. "You dare put me with my mother?" I am not Olivia, her friend. Then quit behaving like her, I replied, my voice a whisper now. "Stop seeking control over everything." Our quiet was heavy, the weight of our words settling in the room like fog. Adam moved back, his shoulders drooping as though my words had hit him physically. "I'm not trying to control you," he added softly. "I'm trying to defend you here. concerning Sophia. For ourselves. Though I could not let myself soften, his voice had a disarming tenderness. Not quite yet. Adam, you are not here to fight for us right now. Not when it most counted after stepping away. His irritation bubbling over, he said, "I didn't walk away!" "You disappeared from me." You denied me an opportunity to correct things. My chest tight with the weight of unspoken facts, I fixed my eyes on him. "You search for the truth, Adam? Excellent. Unable to see you grow into the man your mother desired, I fled. Cold, deliberate, and incapable of affection. His eyes opened and the charge hung between us. You honestly believe that I am that? "It's who you were," I said gently. And it is still who I am afraid of. He moved forward, his hand reaching out to lightly stroke me. The contact was electrifying, waking feelings I had worked so hard to stifle. "Olivia, I am not that man today. Let me show you what I mean. I shook my head, unshed tears stranding my throat. "That's not quite straightforward." "Maybe not," he answered, his voice firm. I am not giving up though. Not among you. Not concerning Sophia. The door to my office exploded open before I could reply, Ella marched in with heels clicking like gunshots against the floor. She asked, her tone charming but her smile poisonous, "Am I interrupting?" Adam turned to meet her, his face darkened. Mother, what are you doing here? Ella turned her head to me and narrowed eyes. "I came to make sure Olivia saw the gravity of her minor revolt." Stakes? I inquired, crossing my arms. "What are you threatening now, Ella?” Her smile grew wider and she moved forward with icy eyes. "Oh, nothing radical." Just a polite reminder—this little game you are playing could have repercussions. As for you. Regarding Sophia. Adam passed between us, his voice a low snarl. " Enough." You are not entitled to bring my daughter into this. Ella wrinkled an eyebrow; her smile never wavered. Oh, sweetheart, I have nothing dragging her into. Olivia started doing that the moment she resolved to keep her secret. I clenched my hands, my wrath boiling over. "Ella, you do not scare me. You never do. Her tone cold, she added, "then you're a fool." "Because you have no idea what I can do." Ella turned on her heel and left a terrible quiet in her wake as she walked from the office. My heart pounding, I stared at Adam. "She's not bluffing," I replied, just above a whisper. "I know," he said, staring hard. "This is why we have to decide what to do going forward. All together. But when I met his eyes, I felt as though I sank. Ella was not the kind of lady to threaten empty-mindedly. And this time, I worried about the cost of her rage beyond either of our capacity. "You have less choices, Olivia." Ella's voice slid over the strained quiet of my apartment like silk spun with poison. She sat across from me, calm and haughty, as though she had already scored whatever game she was playing. "I don't remember inviting you in," I answered, my voice calm despite the tempest within me. She leaned forward, a fake tenderness glittering in her eyes. Oh, avoid being so hostile. Here I am ready to present a fix. "To what?," I wondered as I snorted and crossed my arms. "To your own meddling? Your insatiable drive to ruin everything slightly joyful in Adam's life? Her face reddened, but the smile held rather firmly in place. Olivia, you should not be naive. There is nothing about Adam here. This speaks to you and the mess you have produced. Though my jaw tightened, I resisted letting her know how much her words were wounded. If you come to threaten me, save your breath. I am not afraid of you. Ella bent forward, her voice turning to a terrible whisper. "You should be. The courts will be particularly interested in learning how an unfit mother like you shielded her daughter from her father. Though my heart missed a beat, I did not flinch. " You wouldn't dare." Her eyes narrowing, she added, "Try me." "Unless, of course, you are ready to negotiate a deal." I fixed her eyes, her words sinking in like lead. "What kind of deal??" She grinned, success shining in her face already. "Leave Adam," Take Sophia; vanish and never get back in touch with him. I'll make sure this custody fight doesn't ruin your life in exchange. My chest erupted in searing, relentless anger. "You believe you could pay me off? I would leave the life I have created simply because you are flinging hollow threats? "They're far from empty," she remarked, her voice lethal. "Olivia, if you stay I will destroy you. Your company, your name, all you value. The door banged open behind us, and Adam rushed in with angry eyes. His voice a deep growl, he asked, "What the hell is going on here?" Ella got up, her calm unbroken. "I was merely chatting politely with Olivia.” Adam fixed his eyes on me and spoke with steel. Tell me she refrained from threatening you. Ella wrinkled before I could reply. "Careful, Adam. You might not enjoy what you hear going forward. Tension permeated the room, and I knew with a sinking heart that Ella was about to unleash a war. This was only starting.
