The Umbrella Pack meetings were no games. Although my brothers and I were only seventeen, we had already inherited the role of Alphas—an inherited title from the bloodline. Father taught us to rule from a very young age so that he can retire the moment we turn eighteen, which will be in a few months. He governs the pack, but we take care of the pack's runnings. Ensuring that the pack is safe and protected. We guarantee that all rules are followed and our legacy lives on. Tonight, we gathered for a special meeting requested by Father. I overheard that they wanted us to prepare fun Christmas activities for the young cubs, but the look on Father's face seemed to be a bit too serious and bewildered for it to be just that. We gathered around a massive campfire under the stars in the small rural town called Friesland, which was granted to the pack so that we could be free to be who we were.
I was considered the spokesman in all meetings. I think it was because of my leadership personality and my persuasive, powerful voice. It was like a natural, God-given talent that was recognized by all.
Soon, everyone was present. Mom, Dad, my brothers, and I all sat toward the gathering.
"Thank you all for gathering," said Father calmly. "I have called you all here today with great joy," he said, which left me a bit confused as his facial expression didn't seem quite joyous. "As we know that my lovely sons will be turning eighteen in 7 months. We will notice many changes during this period as they transition to their wolf for the first time. It can be any moment now to a few months after their birthdays. With this being mentioned, they will also be looking into choosing their mates." He mentioned looking at us unforgivably "Of course, if a mate is not chosen in the next few months, they will be left with no choice but to marry a mate from the strongest bloodline." He said with satisfaction. Keir immediately shot a glance at me with a scoff. Kevin shook his head in dismay.
"I will now hand this meeting over to Kyle. He will discuss a few upcoming events," he said, giving me an evil stare. Mother looked as if ashamed even to look our way.
I cleared my throat as I swallowed my spit hard before I began to speak. "Ok, Am... We would like to discuss a few fun activities..." I spoke quickly and bluntly as a heavy feeling rested on my chest. The once happy, exciting feeling about discussing the fun activities vanished without a trace.
"Lastly, we have come up with a Christmas dinner with a gift exchange," I said eagerly.
I couldn't wait for the meeting to end as we hustled behind Dad to discuss his decisions. "Since when was there a rush to find a mate?" was the question that lingered in my mind.
“Father!” I called out, my voice slicing through the tranquil evening as he walked hand in hand with Mom, their silhouettes framed by the soft glow of the porch lights as they approached the house. Instantly, he turned a reflexive motion that suggested he sensed my discontent even before I spoke. The expression on his face shifted to one of seriousness and concern as if he were steeling himself for an impending discussion. He stood tall and squared his shoulders, emanating a quiet strength as he locked his eyes onto mine, meeting my angry eyes with unwavering resolve.
"It would have been better if you had discussed this with us before making it public!" I exclaimed.
"Father, we are in our final year of high school. Finding a mate or settling down will be burdensome," Keir added.
"You always insisted that we marry someone we love just like you married mom." chimed in Kevin.
"Father, please reconsider this decision. We have quite a bit going on right now in school and football. I am trying to take on the role of Alpha. I am pretty sure finding our mates could wait." I added in a pleading tone.
"Mother please!" I continued to beg.
"Son, I believe you should listen to your father. He would never intentionally lead you astray. We just want all of you to have a bright future and continue the legacy of the pack," the mother said in a calm voice.
"Hear is what I hear your points. I will cut you a little deal. You have until the end of graduation to show me your potential mate whom you will marry before setting off to university. In return, all three of you will make me extremely proud by A'sing all your upcoming exams. Since it's the core reason you wish that I delay your presentation of a mate. Do we have a deal? Keir that last exam was not very good. Do I have a deal?!" he asked again.
"You have a deal," I responded in a low tone.
"Deal," added Kevin.
"Father, I will try my best, but you have a deal," said Keir worriedly.
Keir's academics were not the best, but his football performance spoke loud enough for him. This Dad specifically said we had to pass our exams. I could tell this was going to be a big challenge for Keir.
Mother pat me on the shoulders as she and Dad proudly walked off and into the house.
"Guys, I need your help to raise my grades so that the deal stands," Keir said.
"We will start to study together more and I think we shouldn't talk to Chloe and her friends outside of school; they would only be a distraction," I suggested.
"No, I believe we should continue communicating with them. Who knows, one of them might be our potential mate," Keir replied.
"That does make sense. Hopefully, by the time we graduate, our bond will grow, and we’ll know for sure if we want them as mates," I added.
"Ha! You both are here planning to marry a regular human. Who said Dad would approve of that? As Alphas, I think he would want us to marry within the pack to keep the bloodline strong. Humans will weaken us. Our offspring will be half-wolf. Dad will not approve," said Kevin.
"Kevin does have a point," said Keir.
"Ok. Let's forget what Dad wants for a minute and think about what we want. Let faith lead us. If we are to marry a human, let it be. When that time comes, we will figure it out," I aggravated.
"If we are to marry inside the pack, who would you choose, thou?" asks Keir with a silly grin. "I would go for Clara. Her ass is fat," exclaimed Keir.
"You are just so disgusting," replied Kevin
"I don't know. I think I'll go for Leah; she seems like a nice girl." I responded.
"Leah? boy her mother is crazy!" exclaimed Keir.
"I think I could handle her mother," I said with confidence.
"Anyways, who would you choose, Kevin?" I asked.
"I don't; I didn't notice anyone that grabbed my attention," he replied nervously.
"Bro, I swear something is wrong with you!" exclaimed Keir. "You always back out of conversations like these!" Keir implied as if upset by his response.
"Keir, don't wild up. He's probably not ready. We've got a game tomorrow. I need some rest," I said before looking at my little watch. Same time Keir phone chimed.
"Please tell me it is not that girl. Keir, remember what we spoke about." I warned as he looked at his phone with a mischievous smile.
I sighed and began to wake away seeing that he was clearly ignoring me.
