"Finally, Biology is over!" I muttered, the lunch bell ringing like a sweet escape. I glanced at Ron, whose smug smirk and loud laughter already grated on my nerves. It was hard to believe we barely knew each other, yet he managed to annoy me so effortlessly. I sighed, ready to leave the irritation behind for a bit.
As I hurriedly collected my belongings from the table, I felt even more irritated when he suddenly grabbed my arms. His unexpected grip intensified my frustration. "Hey," he said with a casual grin, nodding toward a rowdy group of boys nearby. "You could join us for lunch?" he suggested. In my eyes, they all appeared to be wealthy, spoiled young men who always got what they wanted, but today, they would not be so lucky. A look of disgust crawled across my face. " I would prefer to sit with my friend Maya. Thanks, though," I uttered with a smile of sarcasm as I rolled my eyes and walked away.
I quickly met Maya, who was patiently waiting at the doorway. She had a huge smile on her face as she grabbed me by the arm.
"Come on! It's lunchtime, and you're going to love our lunchroom. The food is always good!" she exclaimed with pride. I followed her eagerly.
She was right; the lunchroom was modern and spacious. We had to pick our own lunches, which was even better. I then saw her little arms waving toward a small table at the far end of the room where three people were seated. "Come sit with my friends," she said as she walked briskly to meet them.
To be quite honest, I couldn't help but notice that they all looked like a bunch of weirdos. I could tell there was a bookworm among them by the Harry Porter Novel resting on the table. Could Chloe be telling the truth? I looked weird myself, and we sure knew how to find each other.
"Pete, David, Th'Alla, this is Celine. She is sort of new, and she is in all my classes," she explained as they all looked at me as if I had sh*t on my face.
"Welcome to Roxborough High," said Pete, pushing his thick lens closer to his eyes as if to scope me better. I gave a hesitant smile and sat next to Maya.
"So, what made you switch schools so close to finals?" Th'Alla asked.
"Um, family troubles," I replied, trying to keep my answer vague. I noticed her curious expression as she nodded her head in understanding.
Th'Alla seemed a bit different from usual teens as she wore her hair in a high ponytail, with red highlights streaking through her black hair. The heavy black eyeliner, black lipstick, dark eyeshadow, and nose piercings seemed a bit much for high school, but she appeared completely unbothered by it all. It was a distinctive style that made her seem so unique. I personally liked it. I guess I am a weirdo.
“Oh, I gotcha!” she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “I hope you settle in quickly,” she added, offering a reassuring smile. Just then, my gaze drifted to a small table across the room where Kyle and his brothers were seated. To my surprise, I found Kyle staring at me, an awkward expression etched on his face. As our eyes locked, a flutter of anxiety tightened in my chest, making it feel like the whole world around me faded away.
The chatter at my table continued, but I could barely focus. I caught snippets of the conversation, particularly Th'Alla’s voice cutting through the noise: “We’re like a study group for Additional Mathematics. It would be fantastic if Celine joins us.” The others chimed in, their voices overlapping as they all tried to capture my attention, repeating my name with a chorus of “Celine? Celine?”
“Huh!?” I managed to utter, finally regaining my bearings and shifting my attention back to my own table, feeling the collective curiosity directed my way.
"We were thinking it would be great if you joined the study group for Additional Mathematics since that's the one subject we all study," Celine chimed in as she tried to figure out what was grasping my attention.
"That will be great." I agreed while still trying to steal a glance over at Kyle when I noticed that Chloe had walked up to their table. It seemed as though she was inviting him and his brothers to sit at her table, and I noticed Keir standing up excitedly as if he fully agreed with her offer.
"Eh, uhm! Somebody seems interested in the Mysterious Brothers!" exclaimed David. They are hot! Aren't they!?" he added with a purr.
At that moment, I realized that David was actually gay, which didn't bother me a bit, but made me to understand that my new friends aren't old, regular teens like my former schoolmates. Pete is the bookworm I sensed at the beginning, Th'Alla is just loud in her appearance, David is gay, and Maya is an unpopular cheerleader. How perfect! What more can I ask for? I asked myself.
"Sooo... Which one you like? David leaned in with curiosity.
"Uhmm... I am not interested in any," I exclaimed.
"Oh! I hear you. I like the quiet one; he is yummy!" he added as I cringed.
"David, I warned you already. Kevin is mine. Plus, I don't think he is gay," added Maya. I looked at her weirdly to hear she was interested in one of the brothers.
"B*tch, shut your boney ass up. That boy doesn't want any p*ssy. I could feel the gay vibration from him!" uttered David boldly. I tried to hold in my laughter.
"I just can't get over the fact that they are wearing summer clothes in the winter," added Th'Alla.
"I am shaken to see that they actually decide to sit with Chloe. They never speak to anyone; they always keep to themselves," added Pete,
"Well, you know that b*tch is in love with the serious looking one from since day one. That's why she work so hard on the field cheerleading, trying to impress him," added David with disgust evident on his face.
"You mean that Chloe is in love with Kyle?" I asked hoping for clarity.
"Yep! Even the blind can see it. Rumour has it that she kept begging him to be her boyfriend, but he rejected her everytime. I wish I could say he's a guy, but I don't get that feeling from him, " added David.
"I think he is finally giving in. See how he is smiling with her," continued David as I bent my head to see that he was sitting at her table of friends, and he did seem happy.
"I did see them sitting together in Biology today, and they seemed to be getting along pretty fine," added Maya.
"She is going to suck the life out of him and take full control once she gets the ball in her court. I wish him all the best," added David. I didn't understand quite well what he meant by that, but I knew I would find out sooner or later.
"Anyways, there are enough of them. Are we going to the game tomorrow?" he asked, and a sudden silence filled the room.
"Why aren't you sons of a b*tches not responding?!" asked Maya as if confused. They all turned away as if ignoring her. "You will be there I need all of your support when I am out there shaking my butt!" she said with hope.
"Alright, we are coming," they all agreed as they let out playful smiles. Laughter crossed the table as we completed our lunches. I smiled along as the energy felt great. They were filled with positivity—everything that I was searching for.
I felt an irresistible urge to steal a glance at Kyle, sitting comfortably next to Chloe. His warm smile drew me in, and a flutter of curiosity stirred within me. Could it be that I found him genuinely attractive? I pondered, wrestling with the thoughts in my head.
