Thank God the day was moving quickly because I think I had already had enough. I thought to myself as I sank deeper into a seat I definitely will not be sitting in next class. Sitting between two brothers felt awkward. especially that i caught glimpse of both looking at me as if I was a snack.
Suddenly a bell rang, signaling the end of this class I duggested as everyone busily started packing up and eagerly exited with one flicker of Mrs Cater hands. I remained seated as I waited patiently for everyone to exit before approaching Mrs. Carter, who was busily packing up her belongings. Kyle gave a half-smile as he exited giving way for my approach.
"Hi, you wanted to see me?" I asked as she turned around, startled.
"Yes, I almost forgot, I want you to take part in the essay writing competition. It's ten thousand words, which will be graded and added to your end-of-year English score. I will email you the topics, and you can write on anyone you choose. I will give you until the end of next week to submit. How does that sound?" she asked excitedly.
"I should definitely have something by then," I said with a light smile.
"Yeah?! I hope you utilize all our resources to assist in keeping your GPA high. Make friends who will show you around, and please take part in our extracurricular activities. Please enjoy your final year of high school and make it memorable. I wish you all the best." she said before waddling away.
Trying not to feel overwhelmed already, I look at my roster to determine my next subject before lunch. Biology; my favourite. I quickly navigated my way through the bustling hallway when I heard a jolly voice called out.
"Celine! Hey, wait up!" I quickly turned to she a slim asian girl, jollily aiming my way as she pressed the center of her glasses with her finger fixing it to her face.
"Hi, I am Maya, I don't know if you noticed me, but I am in your English class. Are you heading to Bio?" she asked with a bright, radiant smile.
"Yeah, I'm still trying to find my way around." I scuffed.
"Great, I am in Biology as well; come on, I'll show you around. There is an empty locker near mine. Maybe you can use it, relieve yourself the load." she smiled, looking down at my filled hands.
"Sure." I replied, following by her side. As we coursed our way, my eyes came across Kyle and his brothers who were standing by their lockers just then Kyle, and my eyes made four, forcing me to look away immediately. Something about him makes me nervous, and it seems as though I wouldn't be getting over it anytime soon. Something about them seemed so strange, and I just don't know what it was.
"Are you looking at the triplet brothers? They are like the school's hottest guys, but they are so mysterious. They barely endulge with anyone, but they are a part of the football team. They are demons on the field. I am a cheerleader. I never missed a game. Tommorrow night they have a game for 6 p.m. maybe you should come." indicated Maya.
"You know what would be great?" Her mischievous eyes widen. " How about you join the cheerleading team." she suggested.
"No, I don't think that's a great idea; can't dance and do all does fun stuff." I immediately implied.
"Just think about it... It's the easiest way to add an extra curriculum to your schedule, increasing your GPA. P.S. It's not that hard to be a cheerleader." she added before stopping in front of a locker.
"This is a vacant locker, it's right next to mine and it's all yours. How fantabulous?" she said with a proud smile. She quickly opened it and then gladly handed me the keys. To my surprise, it was clean, as if it were new. I gladly deposited my belongings, feeling an immediate relief in my back. I took out my things for biology and shut the door close to be startled by a familiar face. Then it hit me. It was the same girl displayed on the banner I saw earlier. She looked annoyed, and she wasn't alone. She had two other girls standing at her side, looking just as irritated.
"Well, if it isn't Mrs. GPA 4.2, Mrs intelligent," she said with a mischievous smile, glancing at her companions as if searching for validation. She then boldly stroked her hands through my hair.
"Chloe, leave her alone. We don't want any trouble," warned Maya aggressively.
My heart began to race as if adrenaline was flooding my body. I had no intention of getting into a fight on my first day, but I could feel the anger coursing through my veins.
"Ouuu! Ugh! Hah! How did I not see this coming?" laughed Chloe. Two nitwits are now friends. I guess nerds have a way of finding each other. " She scoffed, folded an arm, flickered her long blonde hair with the other hand, and rolled her eyes.
"We don't have time for this?" said Maya grabbing me by the hand and quickly pulling me. Before I could think of going forward I was jolted to a halt by Chloe's slender fingers with a push. At that moment I paused and stared her dead in the eyes. My eyes widened as my fist folded tightly into a ball. Chloe then stepped closer, she leaned in, her strawberry pink lips barely grazing my ear as she whispered softly, "Stay the f*ck out of my way." She then stood tall and looked me boldly in the eyes forcing me to look away as if defeated.
"You, practice starts at 4:00 p.m., and don't drag this low life along. We don't have any space left for her!" she said to Maya. Without common courtesy, she lifted her shoulders as if pride and satisfaction rested on her bosom as she strode away. Her two companions followed at her side as if they were puppets. I continued to watch them as their slender, perfect bodies walked away. I could feel tears welling up but managed to succumb before they were noticed.
I couldn't help but notice that Kyle was watching on from his locker. I also couldn't unsee how they looked at each other when she passed him a few seconds ago. Could it be that she is in love with him and upset that he allowed me to sit in his seat for English? I questioned myself. I couldn't come to terms with why she would dislike me, and she didn't know sh*t about me.
"Her parents is like super rich, and they fund almost all the events at the school. I think that's why she thinks she is better than everyone else. Plus, all the guys are madly hungry over her. She is also captain of the cheerleading team," said Maya beneath her breath.
"The same cheerleading team you suggested I join?" I asked, my voice tinged with frustration as I ran a hand through my hair, feeling a wave of annoyance wash over me.
Maya shrugged, her eyes brightening with enthusiasm. "I don't know what just happened, but I’m sure once she sees your potential, you could definitely clinch a spot. There’s an audition coming up soon—maybe you could give it a shot?"
I let out a heavy sigh, the weight of her words sinking in but feeling almost impossible to bear. "Just forget it," I mumbled, my spirit dampened. Just then, the sharp sound of the second bell echoed through the hallway, signaling it was time to get to class.
As I approached the door labeled "Biology," I caught a glimpse of Chloe slipping through the entryway, her confident stride unmistakable.
"She’s in my Biology class too!" I muttered in disbelief.
"Unfortunately!" Maya shot back in sarcasm, as we exchanged glances filled with mutual exasperation.
