CHAPTER 11: THE VISIT

1210 Words
“Freya!” I froze at the voice, only to feel someone tightly hug me from behind. My heart jumped. “Oh gosh! You’re here! I thought you forgot about me! You even promised you’d visit!” she cried. “I-Is that you, A-Alex?” I stammered, startled by the tears streaming down her face. I studied her from head to toe. She looked… different. More mature, more composed. From being a pack doctor, she radiated a strong, motherly aura. She clung to my shoulder. “Let’s talk later, please. Promise me,” she pleaded. I exhaled and slowly nodded. I wanted to talk too, to clear the air. All I knew was that she had betrayed me once—but now, I could see she had no clue about what had really happened to me. “Luna Alex, what do you think you’re doing with that human?” one of my haters barked, glaring at me. “Stay away! She’s dangerous!” Wait… what? Alex was called a Luna? She was Alpha Dwight’s second-chance mate? Alex frowned, glancing at them in confusion. “Freya is a friend of mine,” she said calmly. The reaction from her packmates was immediate—gasps and murmurs of horror filled the room. Alex looked at me, baffled. “What’s wrong with them?” she whispered. I bit my lips to stop myself from snapping. I couldn’t justify my anger here—not in their territory. If I reacted, it would only make me seem guilty. I had to prove I was just a human, and nothing more. Donnie stepped into the tense silence. “Luna Alex, the meeting is about to start,” he said politely, bowing slightly. “You need to be there in a minute.” Alex exhaled and looked back at me. “Please, stay a little longer after the meeting. I want to talk properly and catch up,” she said seriously before following the pack soldiers into a large room. I scratched my neck, left standing awkwardly among my haters, with Donnie beside me. “What about you, Donnie? Aren’t you going to the meeting?” I asked. He smiled faintly. “I was ordered to guide you to the waiting room,” he said, taking my right hand. “Shall we?” I followed him, noticing that Alpha Dwight was nowhere in sight. Perhaps he had already gone ahead. “May I ask you something?” I said cautiously. “Of course,” Donnie replied, as if expecting this. “Why is Alex your Luna? Is she Dwight’s second-chance mate?” Donnie sighed, his expression serious. “No. Alex isn’t Alpha Dwight’s mate. We don’t even know if he has a second-chance mate out there. It’s extremely rare.” I frowned. Then who is Alex’s real mate? “Alex has the ability and capability of a Luna since she was a child,” Donnie explained. “We always thought she was our Alpha’s mate. But when Dwight turned fifteen, we realized they weren’t destined to be together.” “So, from the start, the pack thought she was the true Luna. But she wasn’t. Then Donna died…” I murmured. “Yes. After Donna’s death, the pack needed a Luna. Alex sacrificed herself to take that role, knowing all the possible consequences. She became the substitute Luna,” Donnie said, his expression softening with pity. A wave of sadness hit me. Alex had a mate of her own, yet she put that aside to protect the pack. She sacrificed her own happiness for others. Donnie sighed deeply. “I hope she can free herself from this duty someday. She deserves to be happy,” he said sincerely. I nodded. Alex was kind—too kind—and she deserved to find her own happiness. We stopped in front of a door, and two young men appeared behind us. “Hans and Dione. The Alpha assigned them to guard you while we’re in the meeting,” Donnie explained. “There’s a laptop and books inside for your report.” While waiting, I buried myself in the research report. It was easy for me—I had always been obsessed with studying wolves before the incident. Before… Nina, Bella… my best friends. They were gone, and maybe it was partly my fault. If I hadn’t taken interest in werewolves, I wouldn’t have crossed paths with Alexei. I would have been a normal human with a normal life. “Done.” I saved the draft on the laptop, massaging my sore back from sitting on the floor for four hours. The two guards hadn’t moved an inch in all that time. They were like statues flanking the door. I stood up and snapped my fingers in front of them. “Hey, are you still alive?” My stomach grumbled loudly. The guard on the right almost laughed. I crossed my arms, raising an eyebrow. “Am I allowed to go to the kitchen? I’m starving after writing this entire report alone.” They glanced at each other for a few seconds before nodding silently, leading me to the kitchen. It was huge, with a full set of cooking utensils. My eyes widened. “Wow… this is my dream kitchen,” I whispered, marveling at the fridge and cupboards stocked with supplies. “Do you know how to cook, or should I do it?” I asked them playfully. Their stomachs growled in response, turning their faces red. I grinned. “Fine, I’ll cook. Please be seated, gentlemen.” I gathered ingredients and asked for their preferences. “I want meat and coffee,” Dione said confidently. “I want pancakes and orange juice,” Hans said shyly. “Noted,” I said, smiling at their growling stomachs. While I cooked, they watched silently. I set their meals on the table and sat down, joking, “Don’t worry—it’s not poisoned. You were watching me the whole time, right?” They grimaced at the thought. We ate quietly. Despite being younger, they were physically strong. I knew I couldn’t escape even if I wanted to. “How old are you?” I asked. “We’re fifteen,” they answered simultaneously. “Four years younger, huh… Have you found your mates?” They shook their heads. “Oh… unmated,” I whispered, surprised. When they finished eating, Hans asked suddenly, “Did you really kill our Luna?” I set my fork down, shaking my head. “Odd question out of nowhere. But no. I didn’t kill her. That’s if you’re willing to believe me.” “I knew it,” Hans said, nodding. “You remind me of Luna Donna. I almost thought you were her earlier.” Dione nodded. “I felt the same way when I saw you,” he admitted. I gulped. Diane’s presence must have been sensed by the young wolves when I stepped into the territory. That’s why the little girl mistook me for their Luna. I facepalmed and whispered inwardly, ‘Diane! Stop it! They’ll notice you!’ Her aura vanished, and the two guards looked around suspiciously. I smiled innocently. “Is there a problem?” “Nothing,” they said in unison.
