CHAPTER 3: THE MYSTERIOUS CALL
With his phone pressed to his ear and a serious expression on his face, Alex stepped out into the cool night air. Rosie watched him leave, her gaze lingering on the way his shoulders stiffened while he listened. To whom was he speaking? And what was happening?
She felt a tinge of interest and a little uneasy. Rosie’s thoughts drifted as she waited for him to come back. She recalled the way Alex’s voice sounded when he laughed, and the way his eyes wrinkled at the corners when he smiled. The atmosphere of the restaurant seemed more intimate and charged, and she felt a flutter in her chest.
When Alex came back, his expression had changed. He seemed to be … distracted. “I’m so sorry about that,” he said as he sat down.
“Something came up that I need to take care of.” Rosie’s heart sank slightly. Would he leave her? She tried to sound informal, but her voice sounded a little softer than she had meant. She looked into his eyes and asked, “What’s going on?”
After hesitating, Alex shook his head. “Really, it’s nothing. Just something I have to deal with.” Rosie raised her eyebrows as she was interested. She knew something was wrong but she smiled and said, “No problem.” As they finished the meal, Rosie couldn’t shake the feeling that Alex was hiding something from her.
She wondered if she was being paranoid or if something was really happening. Rosie wasn’t sure when Alex walked her home after they said their goodbyes.
Did their night begin or end with this?
Alex gave her a sombre look as they stood outside her door. His voice was low and earnest as he said, “ I had a great time tonight, Rosie.”
“Would you like to go out with me again sometime?”
Rosie’s heart skipped a beat. Despite the uncertainty, she smiled. “ I’d love to,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Crinkling the corners of his eyes, Alex smiled back. “Great,” he said.
“I’ll call you soon.”
Rosie experienced a range of emotions as she watched him leave.
She kept thinking about what might come next. Would she ever see him again? What secrets did he conceal? She was happy to cling to the memory of their night together for the time being, but only time would tell.
