CHAPTER 5: THE PLAN UNFOLDS
Rosie felt a wave of panic as Alex’s gaze came down on her. She had planned with such care and attention to detail. How did he know who she was? “Rosie?” Alex repeated. “Is that you?” After a brief moment of hesitation, Rosie’s character recalled the script. With a steady voice, trying to keep her disguise intact, she said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Alex however, didn’t believe it. His eyes narrowed as he stepped closer. “Rosie, it’s me, Alex. What’s happening and why are you dressed like this ?” Rosie experienced a wave of dread. Now that she had been found, she needed to act quickly. She had been plotting a retaliation, but she couldn’t tell Alex about it.
Rosie stumbled, trying to think of a reasonable explanation. “ I … I was just trying out a new look,” she said. Alex, however, would not have it. Gently, he reached out and took the wig off Rosie’s head, exposing her natural hair underneath. “What’s going on, Rosie?” His voice grew softer as he repeated the question.
Rosie felt a variety of emotions swirling inside her. She was angry and hurt. She was also curious. Why was Alex being nice? Did he really care about her, or was he just hiding his true self?
“I know what you did, Alex,” Rosie said in a firm voice.
“I know you cheated on me. I won’t let you get away with it, either.”
Alex’s expression changed, and Rosie saw for a moment the man she thought she knew. But his mask went back to its original position, and he looked defensive.
He raised his hands and said “I can explain.”
“Rosie, it was just a mistake. It had no significance.” With a sour taste in her mouth, Rosie laughed.
“A mistake? Do you think it’s a mistake to cheat on me? Do you consider it a mistake to lie to me or withhold information from me?”
Anger flashing in his eyes, Alex stepped back.
“Rosie, you’re not understanding. You have no idea what it’s like to be in my shoes.”
Rosie’s eyebrows went up.
“Oh, I have no idea what it’s like to be in your shoes. You have been lying and cheating on me. I am the one who has been wounded and caught off guard by your adultery.” As the argument heated up, they both began yelling over each other. But Rosie didn’t care.
Finally, she was standing up for herself. As they stood there, facing each other, Rosie felt a surge of empowerment. She would make sure Alex was held responsible for his actions because she was in control of her life.
However, Rosie paused upon noticing something in Alex’s eyes. A glimmer of regret and sorrow appeared. For a moment, Rosie wondered if there was more to the story than she knew.
“Alex, tell me the truth,” Rosie said in a softer tone.
“Why did you cheat on me? Was there more to it, or was it just a mistake?”
Alex paused, scanning his surroundings. Then he spoke, his voice barely audible above a whisper.
“Rosie, I didn’t cheat on you. In any case, not the way you believe.”
Rosie squinted. “What do you mean?”
But with a determined expression on her face, Lily stormed into the coffee shop before Alex could say a thing. She grabbed Rosie’s arm and said, “ Rosie, let’s go.”
“We have a strategy to implement.”
Rosie paused, turning to face Alex. She nodded and followed Lily out of the coffee shop.
Rosie kept wondering what Alex was going to say. And what will happen to their messy, complex relationship?
“Lil, what’s the plan?” Curiosity glistened in Rosie’s eyes as she asked. Lily gave a cheeky smile.
“Alex’s boss will be informed that he cheated. We’ll also make sure everybody knows.
Rosie’s eyes widened in surprise.
“ That’s a courageous move,Lil. Do you really think this is the right thing to do?” Lily nodded, her jaw set.
“Obviously. Alex had to take responsibility for his actions. And we’ll be the ones doing it.”
Rosie’s determination grew. She was ready to confront Alex and stand up for herself. With Lily by her side, She knew she could accomplish anything. They devised a plan to inform Alex’s supervisor of his a******y.
