Chapter 2: Unresolved Tensions

577 Words
Alex stormed out of the house, ignoring Sebastian's furious calls. The icy wind hit his face, but the cold did nothing to cool his anger. His mind was a whirlpool of conflicting emotions, each thought dragging him deeper into his resentment towards his father. The walk to school was silent except for the crunching of snow under his feet. He finally reached the school gates, already dreading the day ahead. As he entered the building, his friend Michael greeted him with a cheerful smile. "Hey, Alex! Rough morning?" Michael asked, noticing Alex's scowl. "You have no idea," Alex grumbled, slamming his locker shut. Michael raised an eyebrow but didn't push further. He knew better than to pry when Alex was in one of his moods. The two walked to their first class in silence, the tension from Alex's home life lingering like a dark cloud. During lunch, Michael finally broke the silence. "You know, you can talk to me, right? Whatever's bothering you, I'm here." Alex sighed, his shoulders slumping. "It's just...my dad. He always finds a way to make everything worse. I can't stand him." Michael nodded sympathetically. "I get it. Parents can be tough. But holding all that anger in isn't good for you." Before Alex could respond, a new student walked into the cafeteria. He was tall, with dark hair and piercing blue eyes. He moved with an air of confidence that immediately drew everyone's attention. "Who's that?" Alex asked, his curiosity piqued despite his foul mood. "That's Damien," Michael replied. "He transferred here last week. Pretty quiet guy, but I've heard he's really smart." Alex watched as Damien navigated the crowded cafeteria, his gaze steady and calm. For a moment, their eyes met, and Alex felt a strange jolt. He quickly looked away, embarrassed by the sudden flutter in his chest. "Looks like someone's caught your eye," Michael teased. "Shut up," Alex muttered, though a small smile tugged at his lips. The rest of the day passed uneventfully, but Alex couldn't shake the thought of Damien. There was something about him that felt different, something intriguing. As the final bell rang, Alex packed his bag and headed for the door, hoping to catch another glimpse of the mysterious new student. To his surprise, Damien was standing by the exit, seemingly waiting for someone. Their eyes met again, and this time, Damien smiled. "Hey," Damien said, his voice smooth and warm. "You're Alex, right?" "Yeah," Alex replied, caught off guard. "And you're Damien." "Correct. Mind if I walk with you?" "Sure," Alex said, trying to keep his cool. They walked in companionable silence for a while, the snow crunching under their feet. Eventually, Damien broke the silence. "I noticed you seemed pretty upset earlier. Everything okay?" Alex hesitated but found himself opening up. "Just some family stuff. My dad and I don't get along." Damien nodded, his expression understanding. "I've had my share of family issues too. It's tough, but talking about it helps." As they continued their walk, Alex felt a surprising sense of relief. Talking to Damien was easy, almost natural. By the time they reached the corner where their paths diverged, Alex realized he was looking forward to seeing Damien again. "Thanks for walking with me," Alex said, smiling genuinely. "Anytime," Damien replied. "See you tomorrow, Alex." As Alex walked the rest of the way home, his thoughts were a little lighter. Maybe, just maybe, things were starting to look up.
