/6/ TWO SOULS He restores my soul, He leads me in the path of righteousness for His Name's sake - Psalm 23:2-3 . KHEL'S POV . Another school day arrived and believe me, it's not unlike the other days. It's still the same, old and boring high school life to suffer with. Somehow, I'm getting used to it. Science, Biology, one of my favorite subjects in morning classes. Like the usual routine, the subject teacher stood in front of the classroom, discussing this and that. Meanwhile, the entire class is silently listening from their respective seats. That includes me. I was observing the teacher's discussion, sitting on my chair, arms on the desk and chin resting on my hand. The topic kinda doze me off, but I'm still awake. It's about DNA. "Dioxyribonucleic acid or DNA is a molecule that carries genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, and the reproduction of all known organisms and viruses," the teacher taught with a hand gesture. Nabasa ko iyun sa library no'ng last last week pa. I could almost yawn in boredom. "Now! Miss Palma, stand up!" The teacher pointed his index finger to the female student sitting on the front row. Pammy Palma. The girl who hits the highest pitch when squealing my name in crowded hallways. She's one of my admirers and I've received a lot of love letters from her. She's pretty and fashionista (as what they call her). But she's not my type. Why? You'll see... "One question, Miss Palma. Do you know why does DNA is also commonly metaphored as a 'book' ?" tanong ng guro. Kumunot ang noo ko. Hmm... I've never read nor heard that one. Book is a metaphor of DNA? Now that sounds interesting. "Well?" "H-Hindi ko po alam, s-sir." Nahihiyang tumungo ang babae. Teacher clicked his tongue. "Eh, palagi ka namang walang alam 'pag recitation. When will you pay attention in studying than doing your make-up, Ms. Palma?" "OOOOOHHHH!!!" komento ng mga classmates ko at sinundan ng tawanan, saka bulungan. "Quiet, class!" the teacher hissed, at muling bumaling kay Pammy Palma. "So? Even a slightest idea, you don't have?" Nakangusong umiling si Ms. Palma. Pa-cute. How irking. Teacher sighed and stepped a bit backwards. "Okay, take your seat. Wala akong mapapala kung pipigain ko 'yang tuyo mong utak." That's harsh but accurate. Pammy Palma is such a birdbrain. She deserves the insult. She sat on her chair with embarrassed face. But then, the teacher immediately shut them up. "CLASS, QUIET!" "AWWW F*CK!" "But I hate homeworks!" "Sir, unfair!" "Ayoko ng homework!" Those students are the one who evidently the "pa-buhat" at "useless" group mates in group activity. Tsk. "I won't back off my decision. This is final. Find the answer of why does DNA called as book? Isulat ang explanation in one-fourth paper. Tomorrow agad ang pasahan," anunsyo ng guro. Many of the students groaned in frustration. Many protested. But the teacher's untamed. He's still there, standing in front of the classroom with authority. "Good luck in finding the answers," he said. "For now, class dismissed." And exact timing, the bell rings. KRRRIIINNNGGG!!! Eventually, the teacher directly went out of the room. Our classmates begun standing up from their seats and go to their friends, some also walked out of the door. Then the classroom was filled with assorted noises. On the other hand, Brint and I remain sitting on our chairs. "Brint, let's go to..." I trailed off as I looked at my seatmate. "...library." Brint is sleeping. Nakasubsob siya sa desk, both arms folded with his face on it, and he's snoring like a pig. Moron. Napangiwi ako at umismid. Great. He doze off in class... again. Guess I'll be going on my own. *** Library. The very sanctuary of mine inside this school. With the cold embrace of aircondition, strict librarians guarding behind their tables, less crowd, quiet atmosphere and most of all... those thousand of books in bookshelves from corner to corner. Books that contain knowledge, and knowledge corresponds power. Which means, books are powerful weapon. Aren't they? Naglakad ako sa pagitan ng nagtataasang bookshelves. Good thing, walang masyadong estudyante sa library. Peaceful. Fixing my eyeglasses' bridge, I stopped in a certain bookshelf and scan the aligning books in it. "Found you." I smirked and grabbed out a specific book from the shelf. As I held it with my both hands, I stare at its bookcover. "ALL ABOUT DIOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID" is the title. So, I opened the book and started searching the table of contents. Why does DNA called as book? That question is stuck in my head. Even though I have the idea, I must know the specific answer in order for me to confirm my theory. And I'm really curious about it. "Excuse me." I was interrupted by a soft voice. I groaned inside my head, slamming the book closed, then I turned on my side to see who it is. A girl suddenly came and approached me. She stood a meter gap, facing me with a bright sunny smile on her face. Nanliit ang mga mata ko. She seems familiar to me. Have I seen her before? "Are you... Perhaps... Khel Davidson?" she asked. For a moment and for the first time, I can't speak in front of a girl. I don't know why, but I just stare at her, as though she has this shining aura around her presence and it's struck me speechless. I stood there, dumbfounded. "Uh... Hello?" "H-Huh?" I blinked. D*mn it, Khel! You look so stupid. "Tinatanong ko kung ikaw ho ba si Khel Davidson?" she repeated. I cleared my throat and straighten my posture. Keep it cool. I'm Khel "Godly" Davidson. Admired by many. I shouldn't be speechless in front of a girl. Girls should be speechless in front of me! "Yes. May I help you?" I look straight to her eyes and immediately regretted it. Confused, I fell in her two irises, like a hole with deep and uncertain end. Sh*t. That sounds gay. Lumunok ako upang pakalmahin ang sarili. The heck am I like this?! The girl smiled wider and extended her open palm to me. "Nice meeting you. I'm Meera Guizon, a writer and your partner for the English Publishing Contest." So that's... Her? Without knowing, my palm accepted her palm. As we shake hands, there's an unknown current flowed through my arms. Like a lightning bolt. So, I instantly released hers and hide my hand inside my pocket. "Wow... That's peculiar. Your soul seemed to repulsed against mine." I frowned after hearing what she said. I don't know what she's trying to say, but one thing's for sure... She also felt that current when our hands touched. _________________________________________
