Chapter 2: Beneath his gaze

627 Words
I stood up slowly, heart thudding, and walked to the door, every nerve on edge. I opened it just a creak , but no one was there—only a thin line of hallway dimly lit by a distant lamp. I exhaled, trying to calm the swirl of confusion inside me. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that Dante was watching, waiting—just outside the door. I slipped on my sweater and crept down the stairs, each step feeling heavier, as if the air pressed me down. I just needed some water, something normal to ground me, but as I reached the kitchen, Dante stood by the island, his tall frame rigid. His dark eyes met mine, and for a moment, the room seemed to shrink. “Can’t sleep?” he asked, his voice low, almost too calm. I shook my head, trying to keep my voice steady. “No, just thirsty.” But even as I spoke, I could feel his gaze, heavy, measuring. Before I could leave, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I answered it quickly—it was Jay, my best friend. “Hey, Ava, just checking in—you okay?” His voice was familiar, warm, but before I could answer, I noticed Dante’s jaw tighten, his hand curling into a fist by his side. I faltered, the phone still to my ear, and suddenly his presence was overwhelming—this quiet, simmering fire beneath the surface. I gave Jay a quick reply, but when I hung up, Dante was closer—and I realized, with a chill, that he wasn’t just watching anymore—he was waiting for me to step into the darkness.I took a slow, shaky breath, trying to steady myself, but the air felt thick between us. I forced a small step back toward the counter, trying to break the tension, but Dante followed, every movement deliberate. “Ava,” he said, his voice low, as if he were testing the edges of control. “You don’t have to hide anything from me.” My stomach twisted, unsure if I was flattered or terrified. I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could, his phone buzzed—a sudden interruption. He glanced down, and for just a moment, something flickered in his expression—something like warning. I felt a shiver run down my spine, because for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I was in control—if I ever was. And as his gaze returned to me, colder than before, I knew this was just the beginning of something I couldn’t yet name.I could feel the weight of his stare like a hand closing around my wrist. Without a word, Dante stepped closer, his shadow falling over me like a dark wave. “You don’t need anyone else, Ava,” he said, his voice a rough whisper, almost like a warning. I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off, his eyes dark and unwavering. “I won’t let anyone take you from me.” A chill ran down my spine, and though every instinct told me to step back, something inside me froze. The line between fear and fascination blurred, and I realized—without even knowing how—I was already caught in his orbit, powerless to look away.I didn’t answer him. Instead, I turned my gaze to the floor, every nerve buzzing with a strange mix of fear and intrigue. And as I took a hesitant step back toward the hallway, the air between us grew heavy, like a secret waiting to unfold. I didn’t know what would happen next, but I knew I was already too far gone to turn back.
