Chapter 11: A Reckoning Begins
Ethan strode into the conference room, his movements sharp with purpose. His mind was still tangled with thoughts of Isabella, of Gabriel, of the war that was brewing beneath the surface. But now, there were more immediate matters to address. Lily sat at the far end of the table, flipping through a set of financial reports. Her eyes flickered up to meet his, concern lining her features.
“He’s making his move,” she said without preamble, sliding a report across the table toward him. “Gabriel’s been acquiring smaller firms with direct ties to Montgomery Enterprises. If he keeps this up, he’ll have enough influence to cause real damage.”
Ethan clenched his jaw. Gabriel never attacked outright; he worked in the shadows, manipulating, pulling strings, poisoning everything he touched. And now, he was trying to strike where it hurt the most—Isabella’s legacy.
“Does she know?” Ethan asked, his voice low.
Lily hesitated. “Not yet. I didn’t want to worry her until we had a solid counter-strategy.”
Ethan exhaled sharply, pushing a hand through his hair. “She needs to know, Lily. If Gabriel is positioning himself to cripple Montgomery Enterprises, she can’t be kept in the dark.”
Lily leaned forward, her expression firm. “And what do you think that’ll do to her, Ethan? She’s only just started to reclaim her strength. If she finds out he’s still pulling these moves behind the scenes, it’ll reopen wounds that haven’t even fully healed.”
Ethan knew Lily was right, but the thought of keeping anything from Isabella didn’t sit well with him. She had a right to the truth. And more than that, she had a right to fight back.
“Then we make sure she’s not fighting alone,” Ethan said, determination setting in. “Gabriel isn’t going to stop unless we make him stop. We need to hit back.”
Lily nodded. “I have a few ideas.”
Before she could elaborate, Ethan’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his pulse spiking when he saw Isabella’s name. He quickly answered, his voice softer than it had been moments before. “Isabella?”
There was a pause, then her voice, quiet but steady. “Ethan, I need to see you.”
He straightened. “Where are you?”
“My office,” she said. “There’s something I need to talk to you about. It’s important.”
“I’ll be right there.”
The call ended, and Ethan didn’t waste a second. He turned to Lily. “Keep gathering information. I need to see her.”
Lily gave him a knowing look but nodded. “Go. Just… be careful with how you handle this.”
Ethan left the conference room, his heart pounding as he made his way to Isabella. The weight of everything pressed down on him—the past, the present, and the battle that lay ahead. But he wasn’t going to let Gabriel win. Not this time. Not ever.
