As they started walking toward the elevator, Rafael turned to her. “I don’t know who you are,” he said, “but you are not Laura Stuard.”
Cam stopped and stared at him. “I’m not? You could have fooled me,” she said. “All my identification papers say I am.”
Rafael looked at her as if he knew everything there was to know. “I have a friend that works in the embassy in Beijing. I was speaking to him last night and when I mentioned your name, he was shocked. He said that Laura Stuard and his sister died a few years ago in a plane crash…in China.”
Cam stopped. How could she explain this?
“That was my aunt, my father’s sister,” was the first thing that came into her mind. “The bodies were never recovered.”
“Was it? The Laura Stuard who died was fifty-one.”
