Rejected Before The Kingdom
My hands wouldn't stop shaking. No matter how tightly I clasped them together, the tremors kept coming. Thousands of eyes were fixed on me. The massive Royal Mating Arena stretched endlessly before me, filled with nobles, warriors, pack leaders, and citizens from every corner of the kingdom. Every seat was occupied. Every gaze was watching. Watching me, Tanya Moonfall. The wolf-less Omega. The girl who somehow ended up as the fated mate of Crown Prince Kael Nightshade. I swallowed hard. My heart pounded so violently I was sure everyone could hear it.
This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. The day everything changed. The day I stopped being the girl people pitied. The day I became his mate. A low murmur rippled through the crowd. I didn't have to listen closely to know what they were saying. "She doesn't even have a wolf." “The Moon Goddess must have made a mistake." "How can an Omega become Queen?" I lowered my eyes. The words hurt but today was different. Today none of it mattered because fate had chosen me. No matter what anyone says, the Moon Goddess herself had declared that Crown Prince Kael Nightshade was my mate. And nobody could change that.
A horn sounded. The arena instantly fell silent. My breath caught. The royal procession entered, warriors lined the pathway and the crowd rose to their feet and then I saw him, Kael the future Alpha King, Tall, Powerful, Commanding. His dark hair gleamed beneath the moonlight. His sharp features remained unreadable as he strode toward the ceremonial platform. Every step radiated authority. Every movement demanded attention. Even from across the arena I could feel his presence, the pull between us; the mate bond Warm. Powerful. Unbreakable. My stomach fluttered.
For weeks I had imagined this moment, imagined standing beside him, imagined hearing him call me his mate. His Luna. Mine. The thought sent heat rushing into my cheeks. Kael climbed the platform without looking at anyone. Not the nobles. Not the crowd. Not even me. Something twisted uneasily inside my chest. I ignored it. He was a prince. Future king. Perhaps he was nervous too.
The High Priest stepped forward, his silver robes glimmered beneath the moonlight. High Priest Malachai, the most powerful religious figure in the kingdom. He raised his staff, silence immediately swept across the arena. "Tonight," he announced, his voice carrying effortlessly through the crowd, "we gather beneath the sacred gaze of the Moon Goddess." Cheers erupted. My pulse quickened. "This night marks the union of two fated souls." The cheers grew louder. I glanced toward Kael. He stood motionless, expressionless, cold. A strange chill crawled down my spine. Why wouldn't he look at me?
The High Priest continued, "The Moon Goddess has chosen." His gaze shifted toward Kael, "Crown Prince Kael Nightshade." Kael stepped forward. The crowd erupted again. My heart nearly burst from my chest. This was finally it. The High Priest turned toward me. "And Tanya Moonfall." A few scattered whispers broke through the crowd. I heard someone snort, another laugh and my face burned but I kept my head high. Just this once I wanted to believe I belonged here. Malachai extended his staff between us. "The sacred bond has been confirmed." A hush fell over the arena.
"Do you acknowledge the female standing before you as your fated mate?" Every muscle in my body tightened. Kael finally looked at me. Our eyes met. For one brief moment, something flashed across his face. Something I couldn't understand. Conflict. Pain. Regret. Then it vanished. My stomach dropped. Fear suddenly gripped me. Everything felt wrong. Kael's voice echoed across the arena. "I acknowledge her." Relief crashed through me. The crowd erupted. My eyes filled with tears. Thank the Moon Goddess.
"Tanya Moonfall is my fated mate." The world brightened. My chest expanded. The words felt like sunlight after years of darkness. I wanted to cry, laugh and collapse. Finally someone saw me. Finally I wasn't worthless. "But I refuse to accept her." Silence. The words slammed into me. My smile vanished. The arena froze. Every sound disappeared. I stared at him. Certain I had heard wrong, certain I was dreaming. "What?" I whispered. Kael's expression remained merciless. Emotionless. "Tanya Moonfall is my fated mate." His voice carried clearly across the kingdom. "But I reject her."
The crowd gasped. A collective shock wave swept through the arena. "No..." My voice broke. No. No. No. This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening. Kael continued speaking. Each word struck like a blade. "I refuse to bind myself to a wolf-less Omega." Laughter erupted somewhere in the crowd then another, then another. The sound spread like wildfire. My chest tightened. Breathing became impossible. The faces around me blurred. Some looked shocked. Some looked sympathetic. Most looked entertained. Humiliated heat flooded my body. Not here. No. No. Not in front of everyone.
Kael didn't stop, "A future Alpha King requires a strong Luna", his icy eyes locked onto mine. "You are not worthy of that position. Something inside me shattered completely. The bond between us trembled violently. Pain exploded through my body. A scream tore from my throat. I collapsed onto the platform. Agony ripped through every nerve. Every muscle. Every bone. Tears streamed down my face. I could barely breathe. The pain wasn't just physical. It was deeper. Far deeper. The pain of hope dying. The pain of believing I mattered. The pain of realizing I never had. Around me the crowd continued whispering. Mocking. Watching. Nobody moved to help. Nobody.
I looked up desperate, broken. Kael stood over me. Watching. Expression unchanged. As though none of this affected him. As though he wasn't destroying me. The sight hurt more than the rejection itself. "Please..." I didn't even know what I was begging for. Mercy. Kindness. Anything. His jaw tightened. Then his face hardened again. The last piece of my heart cracked. The crowd's laughter grew louder. A noblewoman near the front smiled openly. "Pathetic." The word carried humiliation. Others nodded. Agreement spread. Shame swallowed me whole. I wanted to disappear. I wanted the ground to open beneath me.
The arena suddenly shook, a violent tremor rippled through the stone beneath us. The laughter stopped. Confused murmurs erupted. I frowned, pain exploded inside my chest stronger than before. Different. Ancient. Powerful. A burst of silver light erupted from my body. The entire arena gasped. I screamed not from pain but from shock. Glowing symbols spread across my skin, silver markings spiraled up my arms, across my neck, over my wrists. Ancient symbols. Beautiful. Terrifying. Unknown. The moon above suddenly darkened, the temperature plummeted and wind howled through the arena.
Panic erupted. "What is happening? "Look at her!" "The markings!" I stared at my arms, the symbols pulsed, glowed, moved as though alive. The entire arena shook again even the stone beneath the platform cracked. Fear flooded the crowd. Several nobles stumbled backward. Warriors reached for their weapons. I couldn't understand what was happening. The symbols grew brighter, brighter. brighter then vanished just like that, gone. The wind stopped. The shaking ended.
Silence crashed over the arena, heavy, unnatural. Everyone stared at me. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. I looked down at my skin, nothing remained, no markings, no light, nothing. Had I imagined it? The silence stretched. Then I noticed someone, High Priest Malachai, his face had gone completely pale. His eyes remained locked on me and for the first time since I had known him the High Priest looked afraid, not confused, not surprised but pure fear.
A chill raced down my spine. Why? What had he seen? What did those symbols mean? Questions swirled through my mind. The crowd erupted again. This time in chaos. Everyone talking, everyone speculating, nobody understanding. I pushed myself upright, my legs trembled, and my heart felt hollow. I couldn’t endure another second not after what everyone had seen. I turned then ran. I ran from the platform. Ran through the arena gates. Ran from the kingdom. Tears blurred my vision.
Branches slapped against my skin as I entered the forest. The pain of the rejection still burned but another feeling had joined it; fear, deep primal fear. Something wasn't right. Something about those symbols. Something about Malachai's reaction. The further I ran, the stronger the feeling became. Minutes passed, maybe longer I didn't stop, couldn't stop. Then voices drifted through the trees behind me. I froze. Guards, several of them, close, very close. I stepped behind a tree, holding my breath, listening. "...find her!" The voice was familiar. My blood turned cold, High Priest Malachai. I slowly peeked through the trees. He stood surrounded by royal guards, his face remained pale, his eyes wild and terrified. The sight made no sense. Then he shouted the words that stopped my heart," find her before she reaches the Northern Border!" The guards immediately rushed forward. "what if she's already heading there?" one asked. Malachai's face twisted with panic."No." The word came out almost as a plea. "No. She must never reach the North."
My pulse thundered. Why? Why was he afraid of me going north? What was there? What did he know? The High Priest looked toward the dark forest ahead. And for a terrifying moment he looked like a man staring at a nightmare. Then his voice dropped into a whisper, "If she reaches them…," his face drained of all color, "we're all doomed." My breath caught. The guards exchanged uneasy looks. Nobody asked questions. Nobody challenged him, they simply obeyed. And as they disappeared into the forest searching for me, one terrifying realization settled over me.
The High Priest wasn't hunting me because he thought I was dangerous. He was hunting me because he was afraid. Afraid of what I might become and for the first time all night… I was afraid too.
