The First Disruption

Kade did not believe in things happening by chance. If something happened once, it was a chance. Twice, it became a pattern. And patterns always meant something could be controlled, that was how Kade Laurent saw the world. Which was why, when he saw Mira Hale again in the morning. Outside the psychology building standing alone with a notebook in her hand. He did not stop walking. Something in the way he walked changed. It was a small change, almost invisible. He noticed it anyway. Mira Hale was standing under the shade of a tree this time not inside a controlled environment like the lab. The wind moved lightly through the leaves above Mira Hale shifting shadows across her face. She was not looking at anyone. She was reading something. He slowed as he approached the pathway leading past Mira Hale. Not because he wanted to stop. Because he wanted to see what Mira Hale would do if he did not announce himself first. It was a test that was what he told himself. He walked past Mira Hale at a pace. No greeting, no glance, movement. Three steps, four and then Mira Hale said, "You're doing it again." Kade Laurent stopped. Slowly. He did not turn immediately. That made him pause. He turned slightly. Mira Hale had not looked up from her notebook. Her voice had followed him calm, controlled, certain. Kade Laurent tilted his head. "Doing what?" he asked. "Watching, " Mira Hale said. That made him turn now. Mira Hale finally looked up. Her eyes met his like they already knew the answer. Kade Laurent stepped back a little, closing the distance enough for conversation. "I was not watching you, " he said. Mira Hale closed her notebook slowly. "You always start with that sentence." Kade Laurent paused. That was accurate. He did not like that Mira Hale noticed patterns too. "I was walking, " he corrected. Mira Hale raised an eyebrow slightly. ". Slowed down exactly when you reached me." Kade did not respond immediately. Because Mira Hale was right. He did not like being read so easily. That was the time Mira Hale had done it. "You're observant, " he said finally. "I study behavior, " Mira Hale replied. "Its required." "And people are your subject?" he asked. Mira Hale's gaze did not shift. "People are everyone's subject, some just pretend they're not." That landed differently than expected. Kade Laurent studied Mira Hale. She was not defensive. She was not emotional. She was simply present. "You're still here " he said after a moment. Mira Hale looked down briefly at her notebook. "I have class in ten minutes." "That's not what I meant." "I know, " she said. Kade Laurent exhaled slightly. There was something about the way Mira Hale answered. Like she always knew where the conversation was going before it got there. That should have annoyed him. Instead it pulled his attention tighter. "You don't avoid me, " he said. Mira Hale closed her notebook. "I do." "You keep responding." "I respond to everyone." "No, " Kade Laurent said calmly. "Not like this." That made her pause, very small, but real. Kade Laurent saw it. Mira Hale shifted her weight slightly, closing off space between them. "I respond the way to everyone, " she repeated. Kade Laurent stepped a little closer not invading, just narrowing distance. "Then why do I remember your answers more than theirs?" he asked. There was silence. The wind moved through the tree above them. Mira Hale did not answer immediately. “He noticed it immediately.” Kade Laurent noticed it immediately. Then she said, quieter this time "That sounds like your problem." Kade Laurent nodded once. "It is." That surprised Mira Hale again. He could see it. Mira Hale blinked once not confusion, adjustment like she was recalibrating how Kade Laurent worked. "That was not the response I expected, " she said. Kade Laurent tilted his head slightly. "What did you expect?" "I don't know, " she admitted. Then added quickly ". Not agreement." Kade Laurent almost smiled, almost. "You're used to people resisting you, " he said. "I'm used to people being predictable, " Mira Hale corrected. ". I'm not." Mira Hale looked at him for a second. "No, " she said finally. "You're not." That should have ended it. Neither of them moved. The space between them did not feel empty anymore. It felt measured, like something was happening inside it, not spoken, but building. Then a group of students passed behind Kade Laurent laughing loudly. One of them glanced at Mira Hale at him and immediately lowered their voice. Recognition whispers followed after. Kade Laurent did not turn. Mira Hale did, slightly. She noticed everything, that was obvious now. "You attract attention, " she said. Kade Laurent glanced briefly over his shoulder. "It's unavoidable." "It's intentional, " Mira Hale corrected. That made him look back at her. "You think I want it?" Mira Hale held his gaze. "You can't stop it." Kade Laurent did not deny that. Because Mira Hale was again. That was becoming a pattern too. Mira Hale closed her notebook now. "I have to go, " she said. She did not move immediately. Neither did Kade Laurent. Then Kade Laurent said, "You always leave first." Mira Hale looked at him. "That's because I choose to." ". If I don't let you?" That question landed heavier than he intended. Mira Hale did not respond immediately. Her eyes narrowed slightly not in anger in calculation. "That sounds like a challenge, " she said. Kade Laurent shook his head once. "No." A pause. Then he said, "It's curiosity." That word changed the air. Mira Hale studied him for a moment longer than usual. Then she stepped back one step. "You should be careful with curiosity, " she said quietly. Kade Laurent raised an eyebrow slightly. "Why?" "Because it makes people cross lines they don't understand." There it was, something not controlled. For the time her voice was not fully neutral it carried weight. Kade Laurent noticed immediately. Instead of pressing forward he paused, just slightly. Then said, "And what line am I crossing?" Mira Hale's eyes held him this time. Then she said, "You'll find out." She walked away. Kade Laurent stood still for a moment after Mira Hale left. He did not move immediately. That was becoming a habit too. The conversation replayed in his mind not word for word. Structure, pattern, reaction, pause shift. Mira Hale was not simple that was obvious now. But she was not just avoiding people, she was managing distance. Which meant one thing: something in her past had taught her exactly how close it was. Kade Laurent exhaled slowly. "That's new, " he muttered. Not boredom, not frustration, something of interest sharpening into focus. That day he found himself in the university café. He did not plan to be He was there anyway. Ethan slid into the seat opposite him, setting down a drink. "You're doing it again, " Ethan said immediately. Kade Laurent did not look up from his phone. "Doing what?" "Thinking much." "I'm thinking normally." Ethan laughed. "No you're not." That got Kade Laurent to glance up. Ethan leaned back. "You've been showing up to places you don't go to asking about people you don't care about, that's not you." Kade Laurent did not answer immediately. Because that was the problem he did not have an explanation. So he said, "It's a passing interest." Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Since when do you have those?" Kade Laurent looked away. That was the question. Because it implied permanence. He did not like that. "Drop it " Kade Laurent said. Ethan smirked. "It's her isn't it?" Kade Laurent's expression did not change. It did not need to. That was enough. Ethan leaned forward slightly. "Careful that type of girl doesn't fit your world." Kade Laurent finally looked at him again. "I don't want her to fit it, " he said calmly. That ended the conversation. Not the thought. Because for the time Kade Laurent did not feel like he was starting a game he felt like he was already, inside one. Mira Hale was not doing things the way most people do. She was not following any rules that made sense to him. Mira Hale was doing her thing and that was really confusing. Mira Hale did not care about the rules he thought everyone should follow.
